How this vacation makes a difference

All our employers are part of the local community. All our employees are local, in the high season we have 25 employees and they are all trained directly by us. We support and sponsor most of the local cultural and sport activity. We always encourage to visit all the local attractions giving to our guest maps and indications. We like that our guest enjoy everything that our region can offer. We encourage them to eat in local restaurants, buy local product and use local services. We try to encourage to use public transport giving all the information they would need, and we have a bus station not far from the hotel, but public transport in Sardinia is not really good.

We buy our electricity from Edison Electric they produce hydro electric. We have just presented a project for 16 solar panel over our parking place, we are waiting for the approval from the regional government. We try to minimise energy use in many ways. All lights in our hotel have energy efficient bulbs. All the appliances we have either in the hotel as in the restaurant are energy efficient.

The light in the corridor and walking areas have proximity sensors, and the lights in public areas have timers. We used the bio-architecture and many little attentions to create a better isolation, so that we need less energy to heat in the winter and keep it cold in summer. We also try to educate our guest to turn off light, heater and a/c when they leave the room with posters, and by explaining our politics.

We have 700 mq of terrace surrounded with climbing plants that protect the building from the cold, the warm and the sun. We harvest the rainwater on pitchers and amphoras of terra-cotta for watering. We collect rain water for use in the garden, all the water that falls over the building ends up in 29 huge water butts, which waters the plants. We also have showers and half flush toilets to reduce water use.

We always use eco-label certified cleaning product. All the energy we use is 100% made with renewable source. In our hotel we apply a total diversified harvest for our guests. We instruct our employees and we try to sensitize our guest to the water saving and the reduction of the CO2 emission. Even in our restaurant we try to encourage the guests to eat local food and all the ingredients are from the local surroundings. All our employees are part of the local community. We support and sponsor most of the local cultural and sport activity.

We have a laundry scheme where we only change towels and sheets after 3 days or when guests request them to be changed. We try to encourage wildlife with bird boxes included in our buganvil plants, that surround our building. We compost organic and garden waste and use it for our garden after two years. In our hotel we make a complete division of the waste and we try to recycle everything that is possible. In every room there are 4 different containers for plastic paper organic and not recyclable waste. Plus we have a collector point for used oil and used batteries.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We had a late flight into Olbia and got lost on the last leg in the dark. We were worried that the hotel would be closed as it was so late, but when we finally arrived, we received such a warm welcome. The next day, after good Italian coffee and a plentiful breakfast, crossing the road to spend time relaxing in the warm sun and clear green sea.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Hire a Sat Nav or arrive in the daylight! The hotel has a restaurant which serves wonderful food at really reasonable prices.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

There is lots of recycling around the hotel and they produce their own honey and jams at breakfast. There is also a fruit stall just down the road, selling local produce and home brew wine which is recommended!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

One word - perfect!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Memorable - sadly, the rain!! Exciting - the drive to Su Sterra from Baunei.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

This really is a good weather place. When it is sunny, the place is great but there really is nothing to do in the rain and it makes the whole area feel very isolated and desolate. It would be good if each hotel room had a DVD player or English film channels and some comfy chairs. The kitchenette could also be better equipped with essentials like washing-up liquid, dish cloth, tea, coffee, etc.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We didn't look out for this so am not sure.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Because of the bad weather, it was not one of the best vacations we have had. However, the hotel staff were lovely and did there best to advise us on what to do and gave us regular weather updates. The food was good. A bit more variety at breakfast each day would be better though.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

A local festival. Very cheap and safe horse riding 5 mins car ride form the hotel. Gorgeous beach across the road from the hotel safe for children snorkling, catching crabs etc. with a little wooded area at the back for siesta time.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure your Italian or German is good, English not much spoken - we saw very few other English tourists - all fine for us but maybe not for others! You can borrow beach gear each day from the hotel - chairs, parasols etc. so no need to buy them here.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

A lady had a fruit and veg stall right next to the hotel so we were able to buy our lunches from her rather than the supermarket. Excellent cleaning using natural products, good recycling - no tins for some reason though, towels washed only when we requested which was pleasing.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Not cheap but very friendly staff at the hotel.
