How this vacation makes a difference

Environment
The cottage has a number of green credentials including; low volt lighting, A+ class fridge/freezer, solar water heater, reclaimed wood beams, stone used on it’s renovation were supplied from its own land, use of well water, linen is changed once a week in order to save water.

Electricity is supplied from natural resources and runs "Off the National Grid" and gives guests the opportunity to experience firsthand, living with solar panels and wind turbines and using the latest renewable energy systems. It has been installed the most up to date energy systems on offer, and they work very efficiently. The system in is the largest on Lanzarote and runs on a 48 volt system and has no problem powering the 12 dwellings on site. Other green credentials include use of grey water, LED lighting, solar pool heating, use of well water for pool, A+ class fridge, solar water heater, organic fruit and veg and within walking/cycling distance to amenities.

Other environmental practices we follow:

- Waste reduction - We encourage recycling and have bins locally. Any organic waste can be given to our chickens.

- Conserving water - We ask client to be use water sparingly. We use our own well water which is used for the swimming pool, we also use our grey water on our palm trees.

- Conserving electricity – We use only Wind turbines and solar panels

- Encouraging wildlife - We have planted many native trees and bushes to encourage birds.

- Organic gardening practices - The retreat has a number of fruit trees and plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, basil strawberries etc..

- Building materials - the entire retreat has been built using stone from the 30,000 meter estate.

- The well and water tanks which are on the land and originally used for irrigating the farm land have been fully restored.

- Measures to educate staff & guests about our environmental practices - We educate guests/staff and local schools on the Eco energy system provided.

- Office practices - We have low energy lighting, and reuse paper.

Community
Local stone and trades men have helped bring the retreat to a beautifully finished paradise. We offer excursions for local schools to visit the retreat and see the effectiveness of the solar/wind system.

We promote rural tourism by encouraging guests to eat out locally and use local amenities such as shops, sports facilities etc. We also encourage them to buy local products. We provided full information on local restaurants, activities and farmers markets.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Watching the sun rise out of the sea, seeing shooting stars in the beautifully clear night sky, morning swims in the pool whilst having the pool all to myself! Far too many wonderful things to mention here!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If you want to jam pack your vacation with seeing all the sights then you should
hire a car but if there's only one or two attractions you want to see, don't bother. All amenities are within easy walking distance, and the owners will also hire out a car for single days at reasonable rates. Don't worry about packing teabags or munchies for when you arrive as there is an on-site honesty shop that has all the basics at reasonable prices.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The finca is completely off grid, run almost totally on solar and wind, and the water comes from their own well so I think it's about as ecologically sound as it could be. We bought all our groceries from the village so I feel the local businesses benefited.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic! Whilst we were there most of the other guests were couples with young children but as a childless couple we were catered for just as perfectly. The finca is a beautiful place, the owners are friendly and helpful, very peaceful and chilled but also friendly and social. The day trips we went on were enjoyable and hassle-free, but time spent at the finca was wonderfully relaxing too. Can't praise it enough!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Lots to choose from. Probably the power-boat trip to La Graciosa, followed by a couple of hours of flying kites on the beach and watching the amazing Kirsty do her kitesurfing thing.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If you have children, try to book into the Finca. The children have a free run of the site, and enjoy mucking about together. Sometimes we felt a little out of it in our cottage - though the cottage was beautiful, and well-equipped.

If you don't like battling strong winds, don't hire a bike!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. We shopped locally, ate in small restaurants run by local people, and booked the vacation with a small, family-run concern.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Great experience, wonderful hosts and beautiful surroundings.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Discovering Lanzarote was not over run with the 'brits abroad' stereotype

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go out of season, stay inland / away from the large resorts and expect many things other than beaches to do & go to the island to the north

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Presumably some money to the local people (but not through the markets which were huge but not very good), other than the flight yes quite light on the environment

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Brilliant & unexpected, 2 weeks is very long if you don’t want to lie on a beach all day, but more than enough to do for 7 - 10 days. Go to the caves.
