Responsible tourism: Cirali beach self catering wooden chalets, Turkey

Environment

The chalets are built from sustainable wood, in some cases from recycled wood collected from discarded village barns all around Antalya. They are designed to work harmoniously with the landscape, single storey, discreet and aesthetically in keeping with the local traditions.

The swimming pool uses a salt water filtration system, eliminating the need for chlorine and acids.

All hot water is generated from solar panels, no electricity or gas is used whatsoever.

All the garden waste is composted, with over 12000 square meters of grounds, this amounts to a considerable amount of pruning and grass mowing each year, we now have a system in place to compost and reuse this green waste as natural fertiliser.

The chalets are set within a fully working orange grove which operates organically; no insecticides or chemicals are used on the grounds, natural sources of fertilisation and pest control are employed instead.

Guests are advised to minimise the use of strong chemicals. As much as possible, the chalets are cleaned with products sourced for their low impact properties.

Laundry is on request and guests are advised to minimise the use of strong chemicals, sheets are towels are washed as needed, not daily.

Community

All the chalets have been constructed by a local carpentry firm, a long running family business based in Cirali. Where possible the furnishings have been constructed also in the village by the carpenter.

The resort employs local people for its daily operations, drivers, gardeners and maintenance people are all from the community.

This is not an all inclusive type of vacation, and guests are encouraged to patron other local businesses, visit cultural sites and small family run restaurants. Entrance fees from local cultural sites is used to maintain the area, in particular the Chimaera flames, which is sustained and managed by the local community as opposed to local state government.

Cirali beach is a nestling site for the endangered Caretta Caretta - the loggerhead sea turtle. The turtles lay eggs in June which hatch in late August. The turtles conservation initiative is managed by locals and supported with donations from local tourism ventures such as this.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

As a family with 9 & 8 yrs old our highlights vary - top of the list is watching the
baby turtles hatch on the beach - but we are divided about the sunrise wake up call to get there! The pool was an absolute godsend - on hot days we were able to just relax and read while the children kept busy. Toasting marshmallows at the top of Chimaera - fire mountain - was another highlight - and great fun. We could create a long list.... it was an amazing two weeks for us all. Staff couldn't do enough for us at Arcadia Villas - and it very quickly felt like home from home - if not an even quieter, happier home!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Everything you could want is there. We didn't hire a car as it took just 10 mins to
walk into the village for shopping/meals etc and a car was sent to collect us from the airport. Everything we needed was in walking distance. Take torches and sturdy shoes for chimaera ..... the villas provide a self catering breakfast for your first morning at 10 euros each - should you arrive late at night. We arrived at 10pm but the taxi driver called ahead and asked a restaurant to stay open for us until we arrived at 11.30pm! Supermarkets were open at that time - so you
could do a quick shop for essentials should you need to. The villas sell wonderful fresh eggs and water in huge 5lt bottles ....but we never found any fresh meat or fish to buy to cook at home. Not much of an issue as the restaurants are a plenty and lots of choice and extremely reasonable.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Without question....

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We are divided equally between 4 and 5 stars! It was a truly wonderful vacation -
incredibly relaxing, so friendly, welcoming to us all, beautiful surroundings, still
unspoilt - but maybe not for long - off the beaten track enough to be away from the crowds but still have everything we could want - including the chance to buy a large inflatable whale for the pool! Without a doubt - we would recommend this vacation...... it was a perfect relaxing and exciting family vacation!
