Responsible tourism: Colorado ranch accommodation, USA
We use our land to sustainably farm grass fed beef and lamb. We are totally organic and don't use any chemicals throughout the farming process. We believe in giving back to the land and doing things naturally, and we've implemented a rotational grazing program that benefits both the environment and our animals. There are many benefits to ethical farming and it's something we're hugely passionate about, and we're Animal Welfare Approved by a non-profit organisation working to audit farms in Colorado and ensure animals are treated fairly.
Through farming and keeping our own free range chickens we can of course offer home reared, natural beef and lamb as well as eggs and organic vegetables to our guests. Buying produce from us means what you're eating has produced zero food miles and is fresh and organic, the way nature intended!
In such a spectacularly beautiful part of Colorado, there are plenty of low and zero carbon activities for you to choose from, including hiking and biking the local trails, horse back riding, skiing and snowboarding at nearby Purgatory Mountain and you can also learn more about the heritage of the area and how the farm is run today by participating in and observing the daily work we do here, including animal feeding and gardening.
We're in a rural location in the Cortez countryside but there are still opportunities to meet with local people and learn more about the way of life here. The nearby towns of Cortez, Telluride and Durago are popular with visitors, and there are other great places to visit close to the ranch, including our neighbours at Sutcliffe Vineyards, just seven minutes away. You'll find some of the best local wines in Colorado here, and our past guests have loved visiting and enjoying exquisite wines and stunning scenery.
As well as eating in locally owned restaurants and shopping for local produce or souvenirs, you can make a positive impact on the community during your visit by taking advantage of the great local activities that are on offer! Our friends at 'Canyon Trail Ranch' offer full day, half day and overnight camp-out horse riding trips. With friendly guides who know the landscape like the back of their hand, it's a great way to experience the Colorado backcountry!
There are also some fantastic Farmers' Markets that take place in the nearby towns, including Cortez and Telluride. We sell our meats here and we'd really recommend going down and seeing what other local sellers have on offer. As businesses owners, we also contribute to the community through hiring local workforces for all our construction and landscaping work, and one of our neighbours is employed to help us out with housekeeping duties.
