Responsible tourism: Colorado spa retreat, USA

The retreat and spa is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty, and we have worked to blend in to our natural surroundings by making use of natural materials, renewable energy and sustainable activities.

We're committed to looking after the environment by using recycled paper in resort and in the office, and we work hard to recycle cardboard, plastic and glass and have placed separate bins around the site and also in rooms to encourage this.

Our largest contribution is solar power. We have installed multiple panels that provide energy to heat the hot water for each of the buildings and also for the thermal pools on the property, which use salt water and avoid harsher chemicals like chlorine.

The area around us in truly stunning and there really is no need to use a car here: we provide complimentary bicycles for guests to use and encourage all guests to walk into town. This helps minimise the environmental impact and allows you to really get the most out of our location.

We are the largest employer in Ridgway currently, and there are plenty of friendly faces here to help you get to know the area and learn about its heritage. The resort itself is named in honor of Chipeta, the wife of the great Ute Indian leader, Chief Ouray. We want both the community here and visitors to remember and celebrate the area's fascinating heritage! The area's museums will give you an appreciation of the regionís history. Treasured Indian hunting grounds gave way to prospectors searching for, and finding gold and silver. To supply the booming mining towns, the railroads were built on incredibly difficult terrain. Ranching and then tourism became established as more settlers arrived and hard times befell the mines. Museums to visit include the Ridgway Railroad Museum, Mining Emphasis in Ouray and Telluride, and Ute Indians Museum in Montrose.

There are lots of other local people serving both the community and visitors with their restaurants, cafes, stores and activity companies. Whether you're visiting just Southwest Colorado or taking a trip to discover all that the state has to offer, giving your business to smaller independents is an easy way to make a positive impact on local communities.

There are plenty of things to see and do in our local area, and we can put you in touch with all of the right people to ensure you get exactly what you want out of your stay. Whether you want to go river rafting or hiking, or explore the fantastic trails on mountain bike, we can help you make arrangements.
