Responsible tourism: Weaverville Inn nr Asheville, North Carolina

Our property has been declared an official wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. We have installed a koi pond that has attracted honey bees, butterflies, birds and small mammals. Our gardens feature flowering plants, many specifically attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. We don't plant invasive species and embrace native species whenever possible. Though we don't do anything to invite them, our yard has been host to bears, groundhogs, raccoons and wild turkeys.

We make it easy for guests to help us practice green policies. We recycle and compost waste. We use chemical-free (and fragrance-free) cleaners, using natural and biodegradable cleaners like vinegar, citrus oils and baking soda. We conserve water, and urge guests to re-use towels and let us know if they can forgo changing sheets every three days. In the interest of health as well as environment, we don't use pot-pourri or room fresheners, or fabric softeners or any sort of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Our in-room soaps, shampoos, conditioners and body lotions are organic and natural. Our soaps are hand made locally. Our gardens are organic, and we cook with vegetables and herbs we grow on our grounds. For those things we don't grow ourselves, we try to shop local and organically.

We believe in shopping and sharing local whenever possible. We have an afternoon appetizer time when we share menus for nearby restaurants with our guests and make recommendations and reservations. We partner with our local rafting companies, the Nantahala Outdoor Centre, Blue Heron Whitewater and French Broad Rafting Expeditions, and canopy tours and spas to make packages for guests. We also recommend visits to waterfalls, hiking trails and attractions that we feel reflect the wild and natural beauty of our area.

Our area is known for the arts, and we do our best to promote that. We helped organize the Weaverville Art Safari, a semi-annual tour of local art and craft studios. This enterprise supports local craft makers and artisans in the area. We also recommend other studio tours in the area and local galleries. Our own artwork, including handmade tiles, watercolours and oil paintings, are on display throughout the B&B.
