Responsible tourism: East sussex cabin, England

The Cabin is constructed from wood from a sustainable source. Heat is provided primarily by a woodburning stove. Electricity is supplied by solar panels during the day. Our site is home to a variety of wildlife including badgers, rabbits (lots!), occasional foxes and sloe worms all of which we encourage by leaving various areas completely wild. We feed the birds and there is abundant birdlife giving a glorious dawn chorus each morning - less mellifluous but still stunning in flight are the resident Screech (Barn) Owls. We have a 'vegan-organic' (no fish, blood and bone or other animal remains from slaughter houses!) vegetable plot and orchard some of whose ingredients find their way into the optional breakfast. The comfrey fertiliser we use is foraged from the wild as is a not insignificant amount of the food we eat. Recycling bins are provided on site. The chickens who live on site are fed on an entirely organic diet and are allowed to truly free range as our neighbours will attest too.

Our village pub, the Red Lion is a vital part of our community and only survives from the custom it receives. We encourage all our guests to eat at the pub and everyone receives directions for the lovely 10 minute walk through open fields to get there. Everyone seems to love it! Another great food pub, the Rainbow Trout, is a 15 minute walk away. The local village shop is within walking distance and once a week on Fridays there is a Farmer's market in the Village Hall. Guests from all over the world are assured a warm welcome, possibly in their own language, by Cabinmaster Phil Colley who on his extensive travels has mastered Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, French, German and a little Turkish and Urdu! We are generally always on hand to provide local advice and information. We also have a small information room with OS maps and leaflets on local attractions.
