How this vacation makes a difference

The land was bought in 1987 as derelict land and unfortunately had not been cultivated for the past 15 years. For the past 23 years our family have been working to recover the once fertile soil and have been accomplishing this by applying traditional farming methods. On our organic farm we use mulching, compost and the dung from our animals as our only source of fertilizer.

The land has been terraced and the old irrigation system restored allowing us to plant a very large variety of endemic plants, including endangered species of Avocado trees, Macadamia Nut trees, oranges, grapefruit, many species of Bananas, Pomegranate etc. The water to irrigate the land comes from recycling the grey water accumulated from all houses and we are very lucky to have our own water gallery (recovered after cleaning and supporting the walls over a period of 2 years).

The properties on the Finca have all been built using traditional building materials recovered from demolished houses – this includes all wood work and roofing tiles. Built to fit in with its surrounding we believe that all houses have a very unique and welcoming feel allowing our guests to feel right at home.

We work very closely with the University of La Laguna in projects analysing bird behaviour and have been building nest facilities in order to encourage a large variety of bird species to nest on our land. Other projects include the recovery of the traditional black Canarian pig, which has nearly been driven to extinction by cross breeding. In exchange for the meat we are able to collect the fruit left over’s from the local shops and do not use powdered food sources.

Other environmental practices we follow are:
Waste reduction - We encourage recycling and have bins locally. Any organic waste can be given to our chickens, pigs or compost.
Conserving water - We ask client to be use water sparingly. Our own water spring is used to water the crops and also for the swimming pools. All grey water is recycled and even the house has its individual water tanks which gather the rainwater.

The local stone and trades men we use have helped turn the retreat to a beautifully finished paradise.

We promote rural tourism to our guests and encourage them to eat out locally and use local amenities such as shops, sports facilities, restaurants, farmers markets etc...

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The beautiful view from our balcony, out to the sea one way and up to the mountains in the other direction. Such a peaceful place and wonderfully friendly hosts, Timo and Anna went out of their way to make sure we were happy and comfortable - from lending us English story books for our two year old as I'd forgotten to bring any, through to providing us with lots of tips on local places to go and restaurants to try. The delicious food they grew too was fantastic - avocados, strawberries, bananas, potatoes etc. For our toddler the highlight was undoubtedly the ravine of snorting piggies!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

You do need to hire a car really as it's a bit of a trek to the beach or town - it's not that far but it's quite hilly.Try the little beach bar at El Socorro Beach...yummy traditional fish dishes.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. Local people were employed at the finca. The area has been well conserved and all buildings are built respectfully from traditional materials. It is clear that the family are a key part of the community and have an innate love for their destination and local environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

A fantastic, relaxing, family vacation a world away from the stereotypical family Tenerife vacation that you might find on the south of the island!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The beautiful setting and 'local' feel of the place. The owners of the finca were extremely pleasant and created a very relaxed homely feel to the vacation. The accommodation - 'The Stonehouse' was unique and quaint.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Hire a car and don’t expect anything 'touristy' on your doorstep (which was a positive for us!) Definitely chillier and rainier in the north of the island, so pack a fleece and trousers and you'll still have a good time.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, in some ways. The finca (farm) produced its own fruit which guests could eat. Though because of it's remoteness you needed a car.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Good and relaxing.
