Responsible tourism: Unusual accommodation in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Environment

All properties here are "Off the National Grid" and give guests the opportunity to experience firsthand, living with solar panels and wind turbines and using the latest renewable energy systems. We have installed the most up to date energy systems on offer, and they work very efficiently. The system in "Finca de Arrieta" is the largest on Lanzarote and runs on a 48 Volt system and has no problem powering the 12 dwellings on site. Other Green credentials include use of Grey water, Led lighting, solar pool heating, use of well water for pool, A+ class Fridge, on site recycling we separate glass, metal, paper and plastic, organic fruit and vegetable local produce boxes and being within walking/cycling distance to local amenities.

Other environmental practices we follow:

- Waste reduction - We encourage recycling and have bins locally. Any organic waste can be given to our chickens.
- Conserving water - We ask client to be use water sparingly.
- We use our own well water which is used for the swimming pool, we also use our grey water on our palm trees.
- Conserving electricity – We use only Wind turbines and solar panels
- Encouraging wildlife -We have planted many native trees and bushes to encourage birds.
- Building materials - the entire retreat has been built using stone from the 30,000 meter estate.
- The well and water tanks which are on the land and originally used for irrigating the farm land have been restored.
- Measures to educate staff & guests about our environmental practices.
- We educate guests/staff and local schools on the eco energy system provided.
- Office practices - We have low energy lighting, use laptops, reuse paper, recycle waste.
- Onsite company van is a low consumption 49cc 3 wheeler.

We have a hybrid electric Toyota Prius available for guests to use instead of a regular petrol hire car.

Community

All the staff are people resident in the island so we create employment in the area. Local stone and trades men have helped bring the retreat to a beautifully finished paradise. We promote rural tourism and encourage our guests to eat out locally, visit local markets and use local amenities such as shops and sports facilities etc. We also encourage them to purchase local products and offer an optional local produce grocery box for arrival (additional charge).

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Bodega hopping for my birthday!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure to arrange car hire

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - the accommodation was eco friendly, just a shame it was necessary to hire a Car to get around. Car hire was essential not a luxury.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very good.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Finding eggs in the hen house, lying in the bath at Fisherman's Cottage watching the sea, wine tasting at La Cantina, Teguise & at El Grifo Bodega, driving on the fabulous, twisty, unique scenic roads, eating tapas outside Fisherman's Cottage, the views from Mirador Del Rio, walking in the secluded La Graciosa, relaxing by the pool in the sunshine, swimming in the natural lagoon near Orzola, Paella & Sangria night & driving the electric Renault Twizzi, Les montanas del Fuegos, timanfaya national park and the sun setting in the sea on the west coast.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Bring ear plugs for the main road (if staying at Finca) or the sea (if staying at Fisherman's cottage) if you are a light sleeper. There are multi-tickets available for the Manrique attractions so you can save lots of money. There is lots of sun cream by the office at Finca, we didn't realise & bought more! Eat at the classy El Mariner in Arrieta. The hens lay eggs late morning but if you don't find any, there are lots of duck eggs available in the shed at the end.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All electricity at finca powered by solar & wind. At Fisherman's the water is heated by solar but that's it I think. You have to hire a car in Lanzarote so not too Eco friendly...perhaps finca could consider renting out electric cars or giving lifts to groups to limit car hire needed.

It's hard to grow fruit & veg in Lanzarote but would be good if there was an attempt at Finca. No food waste bin in the kitchen due to flies therefore too much food going in normal waste. Didn't see anything to benefit local people, support the economy etc...would have been interested in any volunteering opportunities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was wonderful. A beautiful tranquil setting...very special. Lanzarote is staggeringly beautiful & easy to drive around & experience the diverse array of activities & places.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The setting and accommodation, plus the very warm and helpful owners and staff.
The events organised were great, paella night with live jazz and sangria, also the island trip to La Grocia was very memorable!!!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Try and get a car , if only for one day, the island has so much to offer! it really is a hidden gem.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The Finca is totally off grid, using solar and wind power. They also employ local people, and the local restaurants and bars cater for the locals aswell as visiting tourists. The Finca has a small fleet of Toyota hybrid priuses that come with some of the accommodation, or are available to hire, very eco friendly. Almost all waste is recycled, all food waste going to the chickens and ducks that live onsite. The chickens also provide free to pick eggs every morning.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Absolutley brilliant, very relaxing.
