How this vacation makes a difference

Environment

We use energy saving bulbs wherever we can. We have a sign in the bathroom saying that we change towels only if they are in the tub or the shower. We change sheets every 3 or 4 days to save on water use. We have a nice garden and we even grow vegetables for the restaurant. Organic of course! We compost all our food and garden waste and our cats enjoy our food waste. We collect rain water for use in the garden. We recycle glass. We try to reduce paper use by not printing out every booking. We incite tour operator and internet booking sites to send mail rather than fax. We use the other side of sheets of paper for our personal accounting documents.

Community

We employ people from the surroundings of Arles. We have 3 full time employees and several seasonal employees to help us out in high season. We also have trainees to help the Chef, and therefore to pass his knowledge of local cooking. Most of the vegetables come from our garden and the nearby farm. The meat comes from a local butchery which uses local animals. We use local people and services such as builders and electricians for the maintenance of the property. We encourage our guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants and buy local products. We also encourage our guests to use public transport or local services.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I used Responsible Travel to find a hotel in the Carmargue, France. Basically a farm converted four years ago to a small hotel in a country-side setting.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The hotel has been going for four years and shows its inexperience a bit. It has a limited menu - although well cooked. Also the staff are approachable and helpful but seem at first to be reticent; they might visit the Auberge du Centre at Chitenay for guidance. This said, once the ice is broken, the staff are pleasant and will give good advice on where to visit. Some have very good English language skills. Our room was a good size, air con (we were there in August) and clean. The pool was just right too. Location is excellent - far better than being in one of the towns. Meals are eaten outside in the evenings and several (including us) suggested they modified the lighting. You need strong anti-biting midge cream too.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Tourism in this area seems to be crushed in towns; hotels too. This hotel seems to have low impact.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I rate hotels on the basis of how much I feel at ease after a day or two. In this respect the hotel scored highly.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The scenery in Provence is stunning. It was really pleasurable just driving around. My favourite place was probably Pic Saint Loup where we went to visit a couple of vineyards, including Morties which was just stunning and the wine remarkable! The evening meals at the accommodation were of a very high standard with excellent local wines. They catered for my lactose intolerance exceptionally well.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The accommodation is a good base to go and explore other areas, ideally by car. It's not ideal for just passing the time by the pool as it's quite a small communal area and can get quite full if there are many guests.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Local people were employed and I believe all the food was locally sourced. Plus I spied a veg patch at the back with I'm sure they made full use of. Also the food was seasonal.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable stay. It worked well for us. My only gripe was that I'm a light sleeper and the accommodation was quite near the TGV trainline and the trains woke me at night. Otherwise it was great.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Without a doubt horseriding in the Camargue, from the Paul Ricard Centre at Mejanes, was the highlight of the vacation. We even managed to persuade my 87 year old Father-in-Law to give it a try for the first time in his life! The food in the hotel Mas La Feniere was a close second.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

A hire car is essential, but make sure you check that the obligatory triangle and high visibility jacket is actually in the boot or they will charge you for it when you return the car.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Provence is a beautiful area that is dependent on tourism, the National Park of the Camargue is only sustainable if they get visitors so I do feel that our visit, and the use we made of the facilities for visitors, contribute to the maintenance of the area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a really restful and invigorating 2 weeks and I would rate it 9/10

The hotel served as a fantastic and very hospitable base from which we could explore the west of Provence. The evening dinners were magnificent and the service of Carine and her husband was fantastic.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Do not miss out on the dinner option of the hotel.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.
