How this vacation makes a difference

In 1981 our family bought the farm. It was neglected, without electricity, water, phone and the garden was full of weeds. The house was without a roof and we had to work hard for a long time restoring the old house, building a cowshed, ploughing the fields, sowing good seeds and beginning the beekeeping. We have always used the organic method of cultivating. In the early years of the project, business was not so good but year after year it got better. The neighbours were lovely, they helped us and taught me how to look after our cows, sheep and goats.

In 2001, thanks to the European Community fund for rural development, we built a farmhouse with five rooms. It is built in a traditional way and we have used only local building materials: wood, cork, canes and stones. Now we have a project which will allow us to be self-sufficient thanks to a solar power system.

We encourage our guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants, buy local produce and use local services. All our current staff were employed locally, and we support the local businesses by buying local produce from the nearby farms for the guests and our meals. We also use local services such as builders / electricians / plumbers for the maintenance of the property.

We minimise energy use by using energy efficient light bulbs and appliances and turning off lights and appliances when not in use. We also have showers and half flush toilets to reduce water use. We have a laundry scheme where we only change towels and sheets after 7 days or when guests request them to be changed. All our cleaning products are green/biodegradable/eco. Our garden is maintained without the use of pesticides and fertilisers and the permaculture method is used for irrigation to minimise the use of water. Wildlife is encouraged to thrive in our garden and we support local conservation projects.
