Emma Lake yurt accommodation in Saskatchewan, Canada
How this vacation makes a difference
Environment
When designing Flora Bora our goal was to be as non evasive as possible which is why we designed around existing trails and we chose to make the access into the yurts pedestrian only so tree removal was minimal.
Tuddles Lake is home to vast array of migratory birds and provides a nesting grounds for a large variety of waterfowl. We are always careful not to disturb their habitat and to educate guests of the importance of being sensitive to these areas along with being respectful of all the local wildlife. We need to be careful to never feed the wildlife even inadvertently as it can be very detrimental to their well being to have humans become part of there food system.
We have a composting and a recycle centre in each yurt. We collect rain water for watering. We use building materials and furnishings that are sustainable and non-toxic. We gave a new homes to pre-loved furnishings as well as using reclaimed wood to build furniture. Appliances and light bulbs are energy efficient.
No herbicides or pesticides are used on the property. Low flush toilets and low flow shower-heads. Lodge pole pine used in the yurts was sustainably harvested. Cleaning supplies are all natural and fragrance free. We grow and maintain veggie gardens which guests are encouraged to utilize.
We provide bikes which we encourage guest to use while staying at Flora Bora.
Community
Flora Bora has employed the local community in construction and all labour requirements.
We support & recommend local restaurants, bars, grocery stores, farmers markets & events; the majority of our guests utilize our immediate local amenities on a regular basis. We supply maps of the local area and take time to talk about the local businesses and point out the businesses we support based on their quality and environmental integrity.
In each yurt we supply books regarding the history of our region, local botany, bird identification, and traditional and medicinal uses of our native plants. We also answer many questions regarding the local flora and fauna. Along with questions with respect to growing food and composting in our climate zone.
We donate nights accommodations to a variety of local charities and fundraising events which increase the health and well being of people and/or the environment.
We are also part of the international community Willing Worker on Organic Farms (WWOOFs) which promote an educational & cultural exchange, and builds a global community who are passionate about sustainable organic stewardship of food, animals and land while respecting nature and protecting natural resources. Its a wonderful experience sharing culture, customs and knowledge with individual from another country.
