Responsible tourism: Ghammar self catering accommodation, Gozo

This welcoming house overlooks farmland and a beautiful hillside which attracts a variety of birds and it is quite common to see various birds of prey ie eagles, hawks, buzzards etc.

Water is very precious on our islands and we try to be as sparing as possible. We have installed a special filter in most of the taps which reduces the volume of water coming out of the tap. We have a large well which is fed from rain draining from the roofs. This water is used for flushings, watering of plants etc. There is a solar heater installed which provides plenty of hot water without having to use electricity to heat it up. We are told this saves up to 40% of our electricity bill.

The local council collect garbage every day and Tuesday and Thursday are reserved for recycle rubbish. There is also a small bring in site down the road where you can throw away your paper, glass, plastic and metal.

Our neighbours are our friends and we get a good fresh supply of vegetables from them. The shops have local produce and are supplied fresh every day. A 5 minute drive away is a small craft village where you can buy local hand made rugs, ceramics, glass etc.

There are always a lot of cultural activities going on in Gozo throughout the year - the local population have a lot of pride in their island and any event is always well organised. I try to greet every guest in person to give them a warm welcome and be there to answer any questions they may have and to keep them well informed on what is happening in Gozo at that particular time. During this time I will inform the guests of various local places where they can go out to eat, nice walks to do in the area (there are plenty of those), how they can go about organising a day trip to Comino or around Gozo by sea etc.

There are numerous things to do and see besides having a lazy day lying out by the pool in the warmer months or sitting in one of the many comfortable and panoramic places the house has to offer.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

For me, the accommodation was the most memorable part because it was so relaxing to enjoy the layout of the house with its direct access to the
lovely pool outside. We also organised a Kayaking trip which was fantastic and rented bikes to explore the area and it was lovely to return to the farmhouse after these activities to relax. The temperatures were very high and the
farmhouse had a mix of air conditioning, overhead and standing fans to keep everyone comfortable.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

You definitely need access to a car to get the best out of a vacation in Gozo. You do have neighbours going about their lives so you may be woken up
with some light traffic in the morning but it just gave us all the more time to enjoy the farmhouse.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We generally shopped for food locally so hopefully this benefited local people directly. Again, the farmhouse with its solar power also supported environmental living. Also there was weekly uptake of recycling near the farmhouse and a variety of recycling points around the Island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a fabulous vacation which was made by the accommodation. The owners
were approachable and helpful and made us feel really at home. If you are thinking of Gozo as a vacation destination I would definitely recommend
the accommodation and the area itself was quiet. For those considering the cooking, the kitchen has everything you need and the rooftop BBQ,
which we saved for our last night, was great.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Lots! Sunset at the citadel in Victoria; snorkelling at Comino; sunset on the roof terrace of the gorgeous farmhouse.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Do hire a car as Gozo has so many lovely places to visit (though the bus service is very good). Don't plan to be out every night as the farmhouse has amazing views from the roof terrace, and you'll want to see at least one sunset from there.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We were self catering so bought all our food from local supermarkets, with as much locally sourced veg as possible. We also drank wine from Gozo and Malta, where possible (some good, some not-so-good). Gozo has good recycling facilities, which we made use of.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Really fabulous. The accommodation is luxurious and spacious, with everything anyone on a self-catering vacation could ask for (and more). The owners were great - they were there to greet us, and on hand in case of queries or problems. The island is small but filled with loads to do and see, and the villages and churches are as stunning as the clear-blue sea. We were there in June, which seemed a perfect time as the temperature was still below 30 degrees and it wasn't too crowded.
