Gran Canaria hotel accommodation

How this vacation makes a difference

Staying at our Gran Canaria hotel has a direct benefit on our area and its population. Local farmers, families running small restaurants in the village, independent crafters and artists and young, talented people increase their job opportunities thanks to our guests. Places otherwise known only to local insiders become popular and this benefits all the people living there. All this is managed with the utmost care to safeguard the local environment.

The philosophy of the hotel is a natural way of living. Rediscover sensations. The Canarian / Mediterranean cuisine is based on natural food, elaborated with organic products from the area. We buy milk and other organic products from the farmers in the hamlet. We use locally available materials and eco-friendly paints. We use local craftsmen/builders.

All the staff at our Gran Canaria hotel are people resident in the village so we create employment in the area. We have solar power to heat the water of our rooms. We recycle our wastes and separate glass, metal, paper, plastic, have low-energy bulbs and use biodegradable bags. We collect the rain water & we use it in the gardens & our little plantation and have two water butts. Our toilets have water savers and we ask guests to reuse towels and sheets more than once. We haven't publicity, only a website to save paper. Our construction uses natural materials like wood & stones and use local eco cleaning products. Our gardens are formed by endemic canary flora, so we collaborate to protect them.

We reintroduce native plants in our environment & we educate guests & locals about surrounding habitat offering to our guests to plant a native tree. We give our guests information about hiking routes from our hotel with stops in local restaurants & a nice fruits & vegetables market. They love it. We offer taxi services & the possibility to rent a bike.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The very friendly greeting from Magui & her English speaking staff member, the freshly squeezed orange juice from the fruit growing in the garden, the very twisting mountain roads of the island and the route to the hotel. Found the use of the old buildings/renovation of them fascinating, retention of old features in the rooms (we had an old oven in ours), the different levels of the garden and the fruit trees - just wonderful.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Unless you are sure of it being warm weather or are an all weather walker you need to hire a car to get around - you can get eco friendly ones from the major firms. We went in December and chilly is definitely the best way to describe the weather at the hotel - 8 degrees there compared to 22degrees on the coast. The botanic gardens are well worth a visit. Lots of walks possible from the door - but you really have to ask for the information and not much is in English at the hotel.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Much evidence of local employment directly at the hotel, solar hot water & bio mass boiler with a log fire in the guest lounge - so lots of effort taken to minimised impact. Fruit trees in garden and lots of home grown veg.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable - we had a much needed rest.
