How this vacation makes a difference

Tailor your own vacation from this self-catering Brittany vacation cottage. Whether you choose to be active - cycling or hiking through the country lanes and coastal paths or speeding across the sea by sail or board - or leisurely, it's a tranquil place to discover the beauty of the landscape, and a life in tune with the land and sea. In the heart of the Breton countryside this region is famed for its farm produce and seafood and you can sample at first hand this pride in regional produce from local artisans in markets and shops. Brittany is a region rich in legend and cultural history, with activities and places to see through sun or rain and we provide a rich source of guest information on exploring the locality and region. This includes large scale maps, guide books, restaurant recommendations, market guide and info on local leisure activities.

Our Brittany vacation cottage is a traditional Breton longere, or farmhouse, which is furnished with locally sourced Breton country antique furniture. The garden is simply maintained with a wild area to encourage wildlife and wood management (for our stove) and is tended by a local farmer who uses the wild grass cuttings for his farm. Wherever possible we use eco-friendly, biodegradeable and sustainable products in the house and ask our guests to do so as well. Our housekeeper comes from a neighbouring village (who can also offer free range eggs, according to supply) and a local farmer maintains the land around the house.

The French have a healthy record for recycling, compared to the UK, and every village has its own 'decheterrie' or recycling centre. French supermarkets have been accepting batteries for recycling long before British counterparts. The large supermarkets do not provide carrier bags - cutting cost and landfill, leaving the British supermarkets lagging behind - so make sure you are forearmed with bags for life which we provide in the house. We encourage guests at our Brittany vacation cottage to recycle at the local points of collection – in the village and from our own dustbins. Water is metered, so we ask guests to use it wisely, along with electricity, which is on a limited supply. Our heating is electric, boosted by log fire and woodburning stove from locally managed and sourced logs.

Guests will find plenty of green advice: such as replacing cleaning products, recycling and for using appliances on economy settings.

Our television is not on a fixed aerial and is only used for video and dvd playback – we have tried to maintain a ‘screen free’ house. Here's a great opportunity to rediscover the fun of board games, books, garden games and Duplo for young children. We run a very small letting enterprise, mainly by internet, which reduces our paper publicity material and helps us maintain personal contact with our guests by email and phone.
