Responsible tourism: Seaside accommodation in Greece, Antiparos Island

Environment

Environment
Our aim is to follow several environmental procedures in our family lodge in order to protect the environment for the present, but mostly for the future generations. Keeping that in mind the water we use is mainly rain water that is stored in tanks during the winter season and then filtered in order to be consumed. We also use solar panels for heating the water and we encourage our clients to be responsible with the water’s consumption. All the rooms are cleaned on a daily basis, the linen and towels are changed every 3 days, but if they remain clean the clients can decide to keep them more days. All the products used for cleaning are eco friendly. Water sewage is filtered through special tanks and reused for watering the plants. Plastic bottles and papers are recycled and all the organic waste is being composted. So, we believe that by following all the above, we make an effort to sustain our environment.

Antiparos is a small island which remains unspoilt from mass tourism. The inhabitants of the island include small farmers that produce vegetables; they breed animals, the produce different cheeses and also the famous “tsipouro” a kind of the famous Greek ouzo. We support all of these farmers, we try to consume most of their products in our lodge, since we want to support all these people making a great effort to produce quality products and their products are indeed identifiably better than any other products that can be found on the market.

We mainly cooperate with local entrepreneurs such as gardeners, constructors, electricians and plumbers in order to support our local economy. We are member of a local non profit organization and twice s year we clean the beaches of southwest Antiparos and Despotiko island. Many local people, tourists and entrepreneurs are involved in order to maintain the island’s physical beauty.

Transportation

We believe that the most effective way to visit the island is either by public bus, by bicycles and by foot, especially when you visit places where the road is rough. Using these means of transportation, you are more relaxed and receptive to the island’s beauty and therefore consume less and less carbon dioxide, resulting to a cleaner environment.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I have taken away so many magical memories from this vacation - Antiparos is a truly stunning island with so many secret beaches to discover and the
accommodation is just perfect. My most poignant memory is from our first evening in Agios Georgios (where the lodge is situated). We were walking down at the beach just after sunset when we spotted a huge turtle in the shallow water! The turtle looked so peaceful in the crystal clear sea and we were able to
quietly look on until he/she swam into the dusk.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Rent a quad bike from Vasilis' recommendation in Antiparos town. The island is only about 10km from north to south and by renting a quad you can
explore the mountainous areas and discover the hidden coves that lie beyond them. Visit the cave of Antiparos as it is fascinating. Eat at Zombos taverna in
Agios Georgios for really delicious, authentic and reasonable Greek food and wine. Take a three stop boat trip with Sargos and his lovely dog from Agios Georgios harbour to Despotiko Island then onto a deserted beach accessible only by boat and finally the spectacular water cave where you have the chance to dive off the side of the boat into pristine, turquoise water. Take time to relax on your balcony at the accommodation with the gorgeous sea views and listen to Vasilis and Zafeira practice their music. Watch the sunset over the sea from the Antiparos camping beach. This vacation is perfect for those who love the sea,
swimming, sun and delicious food!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, absolutely. We accessed the island by boat (Athens to Paros, Paros to Antiparos) - the ferries are a really great way to travel. Agios Georgios is a quieter part of the island than Antiparos itself so we were sure to support the local cafe bar and visit the three restaurants there (Zombos is the best)! Zafeira and Vasilis run a really peaceful, low impact accommodation and you can tell that they are totally mindful of their surroundings and respect the nature of the area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This vacation was absolutely perfect and one of the most relaxing I have ever been on! Vasilis and Zafeira are the most wonderful hosts - relaxed yet completely attentive, always making sure you have everything you need/know the best places to go on the island. The breakfast is delicious and really sets you up for the day - Zafeira definitely knows how to bake! I would go back in a second.
