Responsible tourism: Telluride antiques and gift shop in Colorado, USA
We're an EcoAction certified Green Business and have been assessed on our sustainability efforts. We will continue to maximise our Energy Efficiency & Conservation, Waste Reduction, Water Conservation whilst providing people with a base to explore the wonderful outdoor environment that surrounds us.
In the process of being assessed for the EcoAction scheme, we ran tests throughout our building to identify areas in which insulation could be improved and energy conserved, and we chose an eco-friendly spray foam to fill gaps and seal around windows. In the day to day running of the shop we choose gift bags, boxes and office supplies that are made of recycled material. We strongly believe in reusing all packing material and encourage all of our customers to do the same. We also sell items made by local craftspeople as well as fair-trade and recycled items.
Telluride itself is perfect for eco-vacations, with its free solar powered gondola and plenty of low impact activities where providers are always investing in sustainability. We're located in the middle of town so visiting us in easy if you're taking a stroll around.
We're an active part of the community here in Telluride. Having opened the shop almost 20 years ago we've seen the town grow and residents double in numbers! Being located right in town means people are forever popping in in need of a favour or directions, and we're more than happy to help. We consider ourselves a store for the community as well as visitors to Telluride, and we've long supported the many non-profits operating here by donating to fundraisers and helping out wherever we can. We're also located near to the town's 'free box' where locals can leave unwanted items to be collected and reused by other members of the community. This is great for community spirit and helps to give a new lease of life to things, which helps care for the environment too.
There's a strong arts community in Telluride and people get together and take part in a walk which visits different arts related outlets on the first Thursday of every month. Visitors are more than welcome to join. Telluride is also the festival capital of Colorado, with many fantastic events running throughout the Summer from the Wine Festival and Bluegrass Festival, to the Yoga Festival, and these events do a great job of bringing locals and visitors together.
