Environment

Environmental responsibility

At Adriatic Sea Kayaking all guides are aware of their surrounding and they are constantly providing the travelers with suggestions of how to minimize potential negative impacts to the environment and marine ecosystems.
We support the slogan: Help Us Keep the Adriatic Clean. If we find plastic objects in the sea while kayaking we collect them and proceed for recycling.
We keep our groups very small (with maximum 8 participants) thus, any impact on the environment is minimized.
Our guides emphasize on the importance of leaving the environment as it is. We observe marine life but we do not disturb it.
Our kayaks are made of recycable plastic. They do not cause any form of air or water pollution and they do not produce noise that could be disturbing for marine life.
We are economic in use of water and electricity.
We also include the entrance fee to the National Park Mljet and thus support financing of maintenance of the National Park.
In our tour packages we include the tourist tax which is collected by the local community and is used for financing the local projects

Community

Economic responsibility

We direct our travelers to local private accommodation providers. Overnight in private accommodation enhances the visitor's experience, since they get an opportunity to be welcomed by a local host and thus get better insight in everyday life of local people on Croatian islands. Also, in this way our travelers are contributing to the local economy.
While kayaking we stop for lunch in local restaurants. Thus the guests have an opportunity to taste some of the typical specialties of the region and at the same time help local economy. Food in the local restaurants that we visit during our sea kayaking trips is produced organically where possible. Those are family owned restaurants that are supplied with fresh fish from local fishermen and vegetables from local farmers.
For our one-day trips we provide catering from a local restaurant.

Social responsibility

We closely cooperate with local cultural institutions and we point our visitors towards local cultural festivals (Dubrovnik Summer Festival) and similar manifestations.
We suggest to our travelers visits to historically, culturally and environmentally important sights (Old Town of Dubrovnik, Renaissance villas on the island of Sipan, Nature Park Lokrum).
We volunteer with our services in local welfare projects.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The stunning scenery, you quickly run out of adjectives.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The second kayaking day on this trip is very long so I wouldn't recommend it for younger travelers. My 17 year old son found it a bit too long to sustain his interest. I loved it though.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I hope that by visiting and staying in local B&bs and eating in the restaurants and shopping locally we helped support their continued success.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

4/5. There were some organisational issues which meant our last day of kayaking didn't happen but we were given an immediate refund of that portion of the trip.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Paddling round the rocky coast to an underwater cave, abandoning our kayaks and swimming inside. The first view of the stunning azure lakes of Mjlet as we hiked to the top of the island. The thrill of kayaking through choppy seas and narrow inlets(and staying afloat!)

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

To get the most out of it, be prepared to paddle quite a lot. Though itineraries are tailored to the group, and some can opt out if necessary, we ended up kayaking 70k in total, as well as a bit of hiking and mountain biking, which was pretty good going (particularly since I was 24 weeks pregnant! The exercise was actually wonderfully energizing, helped me eat and sleep so well). A bit of swim training in advance (arms only) can help strengthen your upper body. I was glad I had brought (cheap) cycling gloves, helped me avoid blisters & burns on hands.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We stayed with local people (in agriturismo / locally-owned apartment) and bought local food. Paddling, cycling, hiking are all low-impact environmentally. Our national park fees will have contributed to conservation on Mljet.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Brilliant. Our guide Radovan was great - laid back, fun, skilful, knowledgeable and hard working: unlike on UK group kayak trips I've been on, we hardly ever had to portage our own kayaks; he moved them all to and fro at the end of the days (towing, bussing, ferrying them) when we needed to start somewhere new the next day. We hardly ever had to carry our own bags either which was luxurious for this kind of vacation!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Besides the great nature, people from Sipan and Miljet are amazing. Specially at the guest house we stayed at Suduradj. Unfortunately weather was not great, but we enjoyed all moments: paddling, biking, hiking and... having nice wines.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

It is not for beginners. You need to be an intermediate to advanced kayaker and fit to stand 3 to 4 hours activities. In our case, with waves and wind.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, for sure it benefited local people very much and had a low environmental impact.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very nice. We were lucky to be in a very small group (3 people) with a guide who enjoyed sea kayak as much as us. All 3 of us had the same kayak level and mood. It was nice to see how our guide was open (and experienced) to reschedule the program according to weather and our needs. Overall, the operator service was great: good equipment, full care of guests (we arrived and left in different times as prosed, had to go to supermarket, had to leave luggage in Dubrovnik... and team was always there to support us). The trip was a very nice way to visit Dalmatia and experience its beauty, food, wine and friendly people. Just check forecast before!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The local people, in particular the family with whom we stayed on Sipan.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be aware this is open water paddling.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Average to poor, it's a very beautiful place, but in truth the guide was not really interested in us and also 'in my opinion' (and it's what I do for a living) not sufficiently conscious of safety in the marine environment.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you for your feedback for your recent vacation. We were glad to hear that you had an enjoyable stay with the local family. With regard to the guide, we are very concerned to hear that you did not feel he met safety standards. We are also very surprised by this as the guide who was guiding your small group of 3 participants is 5*BCU. However we shall be following your comments up with the him to make sure that everything is being run in a safe and appropriate manner.
