Responsible tourism: Beautiful Burma tour

Environment

In the remote and mountainous regions of Burma there remain vast tracts of pristine forest, home to many of South-east Asia’s last big populations of large native mammals. The population of wild elephants is the largest in the region and is matched by many thousand elephants that work in the country’s forestry industry. The fate of these elephants at the end of their working life is not always secure, so we are delighted to support the work of the Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp near Kalaw in Burma’s Shan State.

The project commenced in 2011, founded by a veteran elephant vetinarian, Mr U Ba Kyaw Than and two former tour guides Mr Htun Htun Wynn and Ms Tin Win Maw. Their vision was to offer a secure home for retired logging elephants through providing an opportunity for visitors to interact with them, to learn about the ecology of the region and the traditions of the local community, and to enjoy the beautiful environment of the Green Hill Valley. Our Beautiful Burma tour features a visit to this fantastic project and is guaranteed to be one of the real highlights of the trip.

Community

We have all lived, worked and travelled widely throughout this beautiful and varied part of the world. We want all our clients to share our love for the region and to get the most out of their interaction with the locals they meet along the way. To help achieve this ambition, for each of our tours we provide language guides, cultural hints and tips, and guidelines for making the best choices for supporting the locals when eating, shopping or exploring.

In addition to our expert tour leaders you will also have the benefit of local guides in most destinations on your tour. Our guides are fantastic ambassadors for their own regions, whether it’s explaining the history and significance of Mandalay’s ancient capitals, Bagan’s remarkable plain of pagodas or the local cultures around Inle Lake, but best of all they act as a bridge to the local people you meet along the way – creating the opportunity to engage in meaningful exchange and turning random encounters into memorable experiences.
