Avoid disappointment - book your Inca Trail vacation in time
In the last few years, the Peruvian government has imposed increasing restrictions on tourism on the Inca Trail in order to protect it from overuse. The aim is to minimise ecological impact and erosion, mainly by having limited access and improving the quality of the operators. There are now only a very limited number of trekking permits available - 500 per day (around 200 for travelers and the rest for staff) - and they are being issued on a first-come-first-served basis. In order to avoid disappointment we recommend booking well in advance (up to a minimum of 3 months in peak season), unless you are extremely flexible over your travel dates.
Tailor made vacations
This trip can be tailor made to create a unique vacation for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort. As this trip can be tailor made it would be helpful if you could you provide the following information: rough budget per person (stating with or without flights), your address and zipcode, contact phone number, preferred date of travel, length of trip, number of passengers, preferred countries and areas within those countries, specific interests & type of accommodation.

How this vacation makes a difference

Where possible we use local guides in order to provide you with the best insights into Peruvian cultures, and to help contribute to the local economy and foster a sense of pride in Peruvian heritage. We ensure that the porters and camp staff are treated and paid fairly in accordance with The Peruvian Ecotourism Association guidelines. Your guides will help you minimise any environmental impacts on fragile trails, make sure that you are aware of any sensitive cultural issues that you may encounter, and suggest locally made crafts that make wonderful gifts and contribute to the local economy. We believe that spending some time staying in comfort with local families can be of great benefit to both visitor and host and provide some truly memorable experiences.

Three nights of your trip will be spent in locally owned accommodation. We hope that you will ensure the fabulous cultural and natural heritage that Peru has to offer, by traveling with us you can help ensure that your visit benefits local communities and the conservation of their heritage.

The Inca Trail trek is run in accordance with APTAE (Peruvian ecotourism association) guidelines in terms of the fair treatment and payment of porters and other camp staff. The guest house scheme on Amantani and Taquile Islands are run by and for the local people. The scheme allows visitors to get a real insight into local life on the island on terms which also help the community.

We were voted most responsible tour operator by UK NGO Tourism Concern. On average 75% of the cost of your trip with us - excluding flights - remains in the destination.

Flights are automatically carbon offset through The Travel Forest, which plants 10 indigenous trees on your behalf (currently in northern Tanzania). Whilst the primary motivation for planting the trees is to offset carbon emissions, the project also works as a poverty alleviation and environmental improvement scheme.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Difficult to choose as there were several highlights. From a vacation perspective the four days on the Inca trail were very memorable. However, the most lasting memory will probably be our stay on Amantani Island on Lake TitiKaka. We stayed with a family without water and electricity and it was both enjoyable as well as being an eye opener.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

To get the most out of this vacation put in the work. For example, Machu Picchu is a magical place which inevitably is also a bit touristy. If you arrive by train it will be good, but if you arrive on foot then you will feel how it must have been like to arrive there when it was first built. You also capture some of the excitement that must have been felt when it was rediscovered. Likewise it is nice to stay in the modern hotels and travel on the trains, but let your guides take you to the markets and try and fit in a stay with a local family to get an idea of life in Peru.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. All our guides were both very well informed and passionate about the environment. For our stay on Amantani we were given t he option of staying in either slightly more comfortable or basic accommodation. Our particular host had not had a visitor for 3 years and it was good to know she would benefit. We have also pledged to help the particular individual.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The best we have ever had.
