Responsible tourism: Sri Lanka Ayurveda vacation

The hotel originally designed by local architect Geoffrey Bawa, famous for blending interior and exterior spaces, connecting buildings with the natural environment.

Winning many awards including Energy Efficiency Awards 2012 Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority & Ministry of Power & Energy 2012 - Silver Flame Award.

Local excursion are included in your package, including the Kosgoda sea turtle conservation project in Rekwa.

Kosgoda is famous for its sea turtle conservation project operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1988 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction. Since then it has released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the wild.

The hatchery pays fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the long sandy beach. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs (mostly green turtles) can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year.

The hatchery buries the eggs in sand, and when they hatch around 50 days later the baby turtles are released into the sea at night. Only about one in 1,000 turtles survives to maturity.

Kosgoda turtle hatchery also has tanks for injured or disabled turtles, including albino turtles that would not survive in the wild.

Supporting local craftsmen and women
The hotel is extremely proud of its unique craft workshop, which is very popular with guests.

Here you have the chance to see prestigious, award-winning craftsmen and women demonstrating traditional Sri Lankan crafts, from weaving and woodcarving to lace making and mask painting. You can even have a go yourself – creating a unique souvenir to take home with you!

There are also display cases in the crafts centre museum section showing examples of many other crafts, including lacquer ware, brassware, coconut carving and batik.

Due to time taken enjoying treatments excursions can be taken outside the hotel at set days and times, this provides an excellent opportunity to learn about local culture and traditions right inside the hotel.

And after seeing the artisans at work, you can buy their products in the shop. By doing this, you are helping to support the local craft After seeing the artisans at work, you can buy their products in the shop too.

The hotel crafts centre is a community development charitable initiative established to ensure that our age old traditions are kept alive for all of us and for generations to come. All of the profit from the items sold goes back to the craft makers and promoting their precious crafts industry.

If you wish, you can also make a contribution to the charity which directly support livelihood of the artisans. A certificate of appreciation will be awarded to you for your contributions.

Supporting local traditions
Sri Lanka has a long history of crafts, especially textiles. According to our history, when Prince Vijaya, the founder of Sri Lankan civilisation, arrived on the island in the sixth century BC, he found Princess Kuweni spinning cotton as he stepped ashore.

We don’t have any spinners in our craft workshop, but you can see the work of a Dumbara fabric weaver, bobbin lace makers, basket makers, woodcarvers and mask painters.

They are all very happy to let you watch them at work, and for a small fee to cover the cost of materials you can even have a go yourself and take part in the crafts lessons . If you’re interested in this, register in the crafts shop.
