Responsible tourism: Machu Picchu trek & community project in Peru


We're committed to sustainability, in the communities in which we operate and in the ecosystems we encounter. We seek to minimise the impact of our trips by minimising and properly disposing of waste created, by conserving energy and water, and by ensuring that endangered wildlife and environmentally compromised areas are treated with respect.

In all our tour operations, we strive to be as environmentally friendly as possible. This initiative starts at home - in our offices we are efficient with paper (we don't print unless absolutely necessary and use recycled paper where necessary). Where possible we encourage our travelers to use public transportation, which also adds to the cultural experience. When we do need to use private transport we use modern fleets, which are more energy efficient and emit less CO2. On this trip we will be usually minimal transportation as there is a lot of walking involved! Not only, obviously, trekking Machu Picchu but we will endeavour on a few walking tours including one around Cusco city.

Cultural engagement and exchange is central to our company ethos, as each trip is a unique mixture of adventure, culture, and philanthropy. We maintain that one only gets to truly know a place by getting to know its people. Volunteer days of the trip are guided by our voluntourism policies developed by ABTA voluntourism guidelines. On Day 5 you get to visit a local family coffee farm and really interact to get to know the local community.


Coffee production came to Peru in the 1700s. There are more than 110,000 coffee growers in Peru, most of whom are indigenous to these landscapes and speak Spanish as a second language. The average land-holding farmer lives on two or three hectares, hours away from the comforts of electricity and running water. Peru’s coffee exports account for two percent of both the national economy and the global coffee supply. Peru is quickly building a global reputation for producing traditionally cultivated, shade grown, high quality Arabica beans.

Peruvian coffee farmers' landholdings are small, and the country's typical micro-wet-milling operation is even smaller. From May to September, farmers pick ripe cherries and carry them to hand pulpers and wooden fermentation tanks. This tradition of micro-wet-milling has protected Peru's water resources from the devastating effects of river-polluting pulping factories. After processing their coffee, most farmers hike their beans by foot or mule into the nearest town—a trip that can take anywhere from thirty minutes to eight hours. On Saturdays, the plaza of the closest town becomes a buying and selling station for the surrounding remote coffee growers. Farmers sell their coffee and buy goods for their homes before heading back up the mountainous foot trails.

On our Machu Picchu Trek you will get to spend a day with a local coffee growing family living near Machu Picchu. You’ll learn about the entire coffee making process from beginning to end and the impact the ability to grow coffee has had on their lives. This is a truly special experience.

Additionally to this project you will visit and support we try our best to involve the local economy in as many aspects of the trip. Our team in Peru are all locals to ensure we provide you with the best knowledge of the country and activities you will experience. On the trek you will experience local cuisine sourced and prepared locally.
