Responsible tourism: Suffolk hiking and gastronomy tour, England
We travel with respect to the environment and are passionate about the local flora and fauna about which we impart our knowledge and look forward to hearing yours. We support local producers wherever we go and offer local produce for our various picnics. Where possible we visit local attractions and producers and share their passion. We walk through the countryside and try to keep our paths clear of rubbish. We are both counsellors on our local council back in France and will always lobby against the disappearing of hedges and other threats to the community such as massive high tension pylon lines or shale gas or wind turbines, whether at home or abroad. The countryside is never safe. On a different level we will hand out one small bottle of water at the beginning of the vacation and encourage people to fill this bottle up as the days go by rather than replace the bottle with a new one. In terms of transport we also give train information to encourage people to arrive by train rather than by air. And of course we talk non-stop about the beauty of Slow Food and the small time producer as we meet many of these producers during our walks either by visiting their domains where we buy their products or at the local markets.
We are counsellors for our local village back in France supporting the local and foreign community and we help out at all the local fêtes. On our walks in France, Italy, Spain and here in UK we source all things locally from markets and farm shops and aim to benefit the local community through which we wander in every way possible: we recommend the local hotels and restaurants to friends and strangers alike; we visit any local activity that is part of the community such as a stud farm, a brewery, local pubs, cream teas, Suffolk churches, gardens, stately homes, houses, etc. as we wander through the villages and countryside discussing the Slow Food movement, the local history, the culture and heritage. The week is aimed at spreading awareness of this community, its people, its food and its culture. We aim to incorporate the locals wherever possible and tip generously for services rendered.
