Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Japan tour, winter festivals

The very ethos of our style of travel is responsible; small groups on fully escorted tours, experiencing the very best of a region, a culture and a landscape, with a friendly local hand guiding the way. Our itineraries are designed to give our travelers real life experiences without compromising the part of the world we are exploring; to travel responsibly is at the heart of our commitment as a global tour operator.

The winter festivals in northern Japan are a sight to behold, and this trip gives you a fantastic insight into some of the biggest and best! Guided throughout by your English speaking local group leader you’ll experience the Sapporo Snow festival, marvel at Asahikawa’s giant snow sculptures and be entranced by Otaru’s Snow Light Path Festival. Traveling with a local guide gives our groups a great insight into the origins and development of these magnificent spectacles as well as helping create employment in the region.

Many of the meals on this trip are at your own expense giving you the freedom to choose the places you eat. You’ll notice that if you ask your group leader for advice on where to eat they will tend to favour smaller, often family run restaurants. Supporting these smaller businesses is a great way of putting money back into local economies, but they are also often the places that the locals eat and where we can get the best regional specialities; Sapporo is well known for ‘ramen alley’, home of miso ramen, and so we include dinner here in the trip cost.

The only real way to travel in Japan is to utilise the rail network! The trains are fast, efficient and produce significantly less carbon emissions per passenger than other methods of travel; as such we use public transport throughout this itinerary. As a company we operate a carbon neutral policy offsetting all passenger travel ‘on the ground’ while on tour. Should you wish to speak to us about offsetting the cost of your international travel to Japan yourself our travel consultants will be delighted to help.

To further reduce your environmental impact throughout this vacation, we request that all travelers exercise consideration when disposing of rubbish while on tour, recycling where ever possible and we also encourage all our travelers to use refillable water bottles with purification tablets rather than purchasing daily supplies in plastic bottles.

The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in bottles, the production of a 1 litre plastic bottle takes 2 litres of water and 200ml of oil. Once discarded a large proportion of these bottles end up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments and we believe that their use should be discouraged.
