Responsible tourism: Greece self drive vacation, Peloponnese beaches

Environment

By choosing our vacations you choose responsible vacations. Our biggest concern is to make sure that tourism will not affect in a negative way our area. For this reason, we offer 5 euros of the total price of this package per person, for the environment in order to offset the carbon emissions that will be caused by your trip. This money are going to be used for afforestation in the mountains of Peloponnese which were hit by great fires in 2007. We run this movement in cooperation with the local Forestry Office, the Tripolis Ecologist Club and the Greek Trekking Club of Tripolis. We hope our movement to motivate other companies, locals and the local authorities to contribute to this trial.

We are also owners of a small hotel in Tripoli which is a city in the center of Peloponnese. In our hotel we recycle paper, glass, plastic and metal and make sure that our visitors are given the Travelers Code of Conduct, which provides all the necessary information that visitors need to know in order to apply maximum responsibility during their vacations.

Community

Our travel company is directed by Mr. Panagiotopoulos who is the founder of the company. He is born and raised in Tripoli so he is deeply concerned about not affecting negatively his area by tourism. Instead he wants to secure that the tourism in Peloponnese will mostly benefit the area and the locals in every possible aspect. In addition in our company all our employees, drives, guides are locals and the company which is the organizer and operator of this tour is local based not only to ensure the economical benefit for the locals but also to make sure that your cultural benefit will be maximized. In this tour you will have the opportunity to visit different places of Peloponnese, to meet the locals and to live the Greek way of living. Also your presence in our area give us a strong negotiation card in order to push the local authorities for the additional development of our area.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Exploring the Byzantine capital of the Pelopponese, Mystras, en route between Tolo and Gytheio. Beautifully painted churches, crumbling ruins, a Frankish fortress with magnificent views and a convent tortoise!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

We started with two days in Athens and skipped the last stop. It would be well worth taking the whole trip and we would have if we had more time. We went in
late July/early August and it was too hot to do some of the sites justice - but we made the most of the beaches.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It was great to do business directly with a local company and the agents were really helpful and well organised. We were driving so can't say our
environmental impact was particularly great - but we did get to see a lot of places we could never have reached in the time by public transport.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The entire 21 day trip was fantastic. Upon the agent's advice we went to the Mani and certainly enjoyed the interesting castle houses, as well as the landscape and uncrowded sightseeing. Also, Nafplio was probably our favorite town with so many interesting sites nearby as well as the beaches and natural beauty. We could have stayed there longer. Driving Greece is the way to go. Get out of Athens and see the small villages especially in the Peloponnese. June was the perfect time of year before the mad tourist crunch.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Listen to the travel agent. He did an outstanding job for us and found the best family run small hotels. All the hotels and route that he suggested to us were spot on. We don't normally use a travel agency, but would recommend and use this vacation operator again.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we stayed in small locally owned hotels and pensions and ate at small restaurants and shopped in local markets. The car we rented was very low gas mileage and a local company as well. We were able to stop at places you could never visit on a large tour bus.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Our vacation was wonderful. We have nothing negative to say. The vacation company was easy to work with even from the United States through email and very honest. We added to the original itinerary which they readily assisted us and found places for us to stay in our desired locales that were so nice. Everything was better than promised! We have traveled extensively all over the world and driving in many different countries. This agency was the best that we have ever worked with.
