Responsible tourism: Teaching assistant volunteering in Maldives

We have partnered with a local charity in the Maldives that has been set up to help the community of Hoedhadhooo Island and Thinadhoo Island with community development initiatives such as education, environment, healthcare, climate change and environment conservation opportunities which are all pressing matters for these islands.

It is important that our volunteers understand this and we go out of our way to ensure that our operations are eco- friendly. For example, we introduce policy of minimising and properly disposing of waste created, by conserving energy and water, and by ensuring that endangered wildlife and environmentally compromised areas are treated with respect.

Our independent travel options and small group sizes help us to tread lightly and to use more environmentally sound forms of transport, minimizing impact, and ideally enriching the environment.

We will offer traveler’s tips on how to conserve water, reduce waste, and otherwise minimize the environmental impact of their trip. We hope that our travelers will be able to take some of the conservation tips they learn home with them.

Wherever possible, our employees use recycled paper and recycle waste created in the office, as well as attempting to minimise waste created and be a “paperless” office. We also work to minimise energy and water consumption in our offices, and we encourage our partners to follow similar waste management and energy philosophies.

Our organization works with Huvadoo Aid operating in Huvadhoo Atoll. Together we provide help to myriad citizens around the Huvadhoo Atoll, and have been doing so since 1986. Huvadhoo Aid exists to enable the rural people to work effectively in promoting and advancing the interests of the rural community of the Maldives to attain basic needs.

We work to build a united and strong community for the advancement of the island. We base our actions to enable the community and NGOs to effectively promote and advance the interests, well-being of island community, and improve the effectiveness of the NGOs serving the community. Especially we seek to strengthen our actions for poverty alleviation in the community by promoting equity and equality.

We work closely with prestigious organizations such as UNDP, UNODC, UNFPA and AusAID, and also other NGOs and councils on both Hoadedhdhoo and the rest of the atoll. Huvadhoo Aid (often written as HAD) currently consists of around 280 members, all of which are volunteers. We run the pre-school on the island, which is located in the old house of one of our founding members, and we employ 4 teachers in the school. In the nearby secondary school, we frequently run awareness to improve the pupil’s awareness and personal skills.

We also want to ensure that Teaching projects are following the guidelines of responsible travel. This includes :
