Responsible tourism: Thessaloniki city break in Greece
Thermaikos Gulf, the semi enclosed bay close to the city of Thessaloniki has some pretty severe pollution problems. The gulf receives the waters of four major rivers. Increasing awareness regarding agricultural effluents, municipal and industrial waste to protect coastal biotopes is of major importance; We are proud to support and encourage every action towards reduction of coastal pollution.
We always eat at local tavernas and independent restaurants and choose local suppliers for food shopping. Thessaloniki is famous for its wonderful produce and the food market is unique in its diversity! Our tours in this wonderful city are on foot, and if necessary we encourage public transport! As we stay in a lovely hostel run by an inspired bunch of young ladies we help them save in energy by switching off every appliance as we leave our rooms, and we are very careful with hot water and heating to care for the environment and their bills.
We make the best of this incomparable city by visiting off peak time, helping the struggling local economy when it needs us at most. This provides income throughout the year which is very important for local traders.
We use young inspired local guides who love their city, are proud of their history and we encourage their projects to explore the city with a different voice! They re-tell the city’s story in a creative, pleasant and approachable way for all. Thessaloniki is the second largest city of Greece with a vibrant shopping area.
We always promote the local independent stores for shopping and you will find very good bargains especially now that the euro is weak. Businesses on all levels are happy to see us in their premises - we are good customers. We make a promise not to shop at multinational chain stores where the profits do little to benefit the local community.
