Responsible tourism: Photography vacation in the Spanish Pyrenees

Environment

We are passionate about the environment and the wildlife where we live. The Ordesa National Park is a World Biosphere Reserve and a ‘Special Protection Area for Birds’ with over 171 species, including the rare Lammergeier or Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus Barbatus). We support the Lammergeier Conservation Foundation by using guides from the Foundation, visiting the raptor feeding stations with guests and selling the Foundation T-shirts. This helps fund a breeding program in our area which has had great success.

There are also well over 100 species of butterflies and moths in our area, including the rare and beautiful Isabelina Moth (Actias Isabellae) and the Giant Peacock Moth (Saturnia Pyri). We have been successful in hatching the eggs and releasing the caterpillars for these moths. The nature of photography requires a certain level of thoughtfulness, and stillness which is in tune with protecting the environments we photograph in. The instructor will let guests know the best way to travel through fragile areas and view wildlife with care so as not to disturb them.

At the farmhouse we have geothermal heating and hot water with minimal environmental impact. We also harvest rainwater for both the irrigation of our vegetable patch and garden, and for the washing machine.

We recycle all we can, including building materials and furniture. For example all the vanity units in the luxury bathrooms are unique secondhand pieces of furniture, adapted with a granite top and basin. All the furniture in the house is antique or secondhand and has been or is in the process of being restored by Simon, your host. Many of the external doors are secondhand and have been adapted.

The beams and stone from the four year renovation of the property have been reused throughout the building process. We continue to reuse this material now as we landscape the garden.

Community

We support the local economy wherever possible by employing guides, experts and teachers from our area. We offer english lessons to our guides, providing them with a greater opportunity for work.

We involve our neighbours with our vacations, offering the possibility to visit their houses which have changed little through the centuries. This gives a unique insight into the culture and traditions of the high Pyrenees. In return we make donations to the village fund, for amongst other things the maintenance of our historic chapel of San Urbez (hermitage).

We also offer a guided visit to the chapel of San Urbez, explaining the stories about our saint, his miracles and the architectural features. For this, we ask our guests for a donation in the chapel collection box.

We are involved in trying to preserve and restore the local pathways, acting as volunteers as the need arises. We will be running a path clearing vacation in the future.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I actually arrived 3 days before the photography week actually started, so spent those days with the previous group who were there on a walking vacation, so I managed to sample the best of 2 different vacations.
I would heartily recommend the place and the area to either walkers or photographers, or to anyone else for that matter. It is a hidden corner of Spain unknown to almost all visitors who flock to the sunbeds on the costas.
It was a very beautiful and photogenic area seen at it's most spectacular time, during the autumn while the trees were in full colour change.
But, as magnificent as that was to witness, nothing will compare to watching lammergeier in flight. Having spent hours photographing them from a clifftop viewing point, we retired to an outdoor restaurant for a leisurely lunch,
only to be treated to a display of these magnificent birds that wouldn't have been out of place on an Attenborough documentary.
Totally unforgettable.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't think twice. I'd recommend everyone to visit Aragon and in particular the Ordesa & Monte Perdido National Park, and I couldn't think of a better base and better hosts than at Simon and Lucy's farmhouse in Albella.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. Both the walking vacation and the photography vacation used local Spanish guides. Both these guides, Alberto and Iñaki, were very knowledgable about their subject, enthusiastic, entertaining and spoke an excellent standard of English.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

One of my favourite ever vacations. Having visited Spain dozens of times, I have finally been let into the secret that the Pyrenees and Aragon have to offer. I am very sure that I will be back for another look as soon as I can.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It's tough to say what what was my most exciting part as it was all so wonderful, but for sure the amazing views I will remember forever and the experience of hard work being paid off with a picnic at the top of a mountain looking out across the pyrenees.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for the tough walks, but do bare in mind you will not regret it! And as for photography equipment, bring everything as you never know what you might need!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I dont believe I reduced environmental impacts but the things I have have learnt may help in the future. Also the information gained about conservation I feel supported many areas.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This is definitely one of the best vacations I have been on, such a wonderful mix of things, and it will definitely push you to your limits, well at least for me it did! I learnt a lot about photography which was why I attended in the first place, but apart from photography I learnt so much about the history of the pyrenees, wildlife and general things. Lucy and Simon are great hosts and go to every effort to make you feel at home.
