Responsible tourism: Azores adventure vacation, hiking & whale watching

Our partner is proud to be a Partner of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA): the world’s largest Partnership working to protect whales, dolphins and porpoises. Whale watching is carried out by a group of marine biologists, which use the trip to support their scientific research. Strict rules of observation are respected and care is taken not to disturb cetaceans or their habitats. Trips are for scientific purposes and clients are welcome to take part in these, including whale identification.

Before the tour a marine biologist gives a briefing to inform our visitors about the conversion of whale hunting to whale watching in the Azores, species which may be sighted, rules of observation and respect for the animals and safety measures aboard. During the tour our biologists and guides explain more about the cetacean species sighted as well as other marine life and points of interest along the island.

We also organise activity days with these groups and invite them to participate in conservation days, such as cleaning of the coastline and walking trails on the island. At sea we remove litter encountered in the water. We also reduce our use of fuel at sea by using onshore lookouts to locate the animals, thereby reducing time spent searching and traveling.

Our recent partnership with the project Life Priolo, supports and promotes the conservation of the Priolo bird (Pyrrhula murina). This species is endemic to São Miguel Island in the Azores, more specifically to the mountain complex of Serra da Tronqueira, a protected area in the region of Nordeste and Povoação. Its estimated population is now approximately 1000 individuals, although it continues to be listed as critically endangered and is considered to be the most threatened passerine bird in all of Europe. The project Life Priolo contributes to promoting sustainable tourism in the region and we include a visit to the project’s interpretation centre and surrounding wildlife area.

We developed whale watching tourism that was sympathetic to the traditions of whaling, incorporating, for example, the use of the old whaling lookout towers (“vigias”) to detect the whales. Today, whale watching is a very important activity for the local community and is an important platform for new scientific research on these mysterious animals.

It is our intention to enrich your visit by putting you into contact with local trades and the people that can share an experience with you. Therefore many of our programs include visits to local producers and different handcrafts, and on these occasions you can interact with locals that generally like to talk about the traditions and way of life on the island. During the land activities, the products that we use for picnic lunches are local and traditional and made by social enterprises and traditional restaurants.

Our partner's nonprofit association supports people with special needs, promoting personal, social and professional development required for employment opportunities, as well as rehabilitation and increased value for special needs people in the community. Our partner works with small groups of young adults, giving them the opportunity to join us aboard our whale watching trips throughout the year. During winter time the participants produce handicrafts under the guidance and orientation of specialist rehabilitation monitors. These handicrafts are inspired by their whale watching tours and sold in local souvenir shops. The value earned from the sale of these products is returned to fund the activities of the association.
