Responsible tourism: Knitting vacations in the Shetland Islands, Scotland

Environment

As soon as we launched these trips to the Shetland Islands, we were thinking up ways to ensure that we could do our bit to support the environment. We have changed our methods of having bulks of brochures printed externally to printing information by request only in-house, so we can cut paper wastage dramatically.

On both the May and July departures, we will be visiting the Sumburgh Head RSPB Reserve to support the wonderful work that the reserve does to preserve the iconic wildlife that the Shetland Islands are so well-known for. This gives our clients the chance to embrace the local wildlife and we have the opportunity to witness thousands of breeding seabirds such as puffins and guillemots. The RSPB reserve at Sumburgh Header is Shetland's most accessible seabird colony and is also recognised as the best place in the Shetland Islands to spot Killer Whales and other cetaceans during the summer months.

Community

In our Stitchtopia vacations, we always seek to meet with local groups who share our customers' interests. The tours are selected because they visit places which are renowned for their connection to yarn or textiles; thus our customers are keen to visit these places in order to purchase locally produced materials and to better understand and learn the traditional techniques. For example, with these trips to the Shetland Islands, we will be visiting local shops such as Jamieson's of Shetland who are a family owned business well known for producing the purest 100% Shetland yarn.

One of our experts, Hazel Tindall, is passionate about continuing the long tradition of knitting on The Shetland Islands, and is currently involved with the local project, ShetlandPeerieMakkers. This campaign has gained widespread support for helping to sustain Shetland's knitting culture for future generations with projects to provide free knitting lessons for young people.

We will also be visiting local knitwear designers to support the hard work they’ve put in to help preserve the knitting legacy of the Shetland Islands.
