Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Grand tour of Cambodia, tailor made

We want to maximise the long-term positive interactions between vacationmakers, locals, wildlife and the environment and are committed to animal welfare both for captive animals and those observed in a wild environment. We commit to continuously work with suppliers to ensure compliance with relevant national and international welfare legislation and best practice. As such parts of the revenue raised from this itinerary supports the work of scientists and researchers that strive to preserve the endangered northern yellow-cheeked gibbons found in the Ratanakiri region. Furthermore all trekking experiences included in this itinerary follow the highest wildlife conservation standards. To preserve the peace of the area, parties joining the gibbon trek are limited to a maximum of six people over the age of sixteen.

We actively support smaller, boutique and independent hotels that are able to operate much more resource-efficiently than larger hotels. All accommodation options included in this trip fall into this category.

We aim to travel lightly whenever possible and so there will be opportunity to explore by bike - in Koh Trong for example, river and on foot in Sen Monorom, where you can also swim in naturally fed waterfalls. We hope that by visiting these remote spots of natural beauty we will help to underline their significance for future generations.

We commit to exclusively using suppliers that are local companies who recruit locally, offer good working conditions and pay fair wages that are at least a quarter higher than the national average.

We encourage guests to fully explore the country, gain a genuine appreciation of the country and its people by using authentic activities, local guides and local hotels. This itinerary in particular takes the traveler far off the tourist-trail, including remote locations such as Kratie, Sen Monorom and the floating villages of Tonle Sap. This means that income from tourism is distributed beyond Cambodia’s main tourist spots around Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

We ensure our guests are well informed travelers through the provision of comprehensive pre-departure information on tipping, begging, cultural norms etc., as well as an in-country welcome pack with information on major sites, activities, local eating, shopping and basic language. We encourage our guests to eat out, sampling everything from home cooked meals, street food in Battambang to deep fried deep tarantulas in Kratie.

In addition we train our guides to help people discover the real Cambodia. This includes teaching travelers local values, customs and basic phrases in Khmer. Guides also encourage our clients to interact with locals and help to make them feel part of the community.
