Responsible tourism: New Year's vacation in Sweden, Arctic Auroras

Environment

Your base for the week is owned and run by Dick and Mina who are wholly dedicated to the Great Outdoors. Their passion for their surroundings is clear in all that they do and they want their guests to understand their homeland and aid in its protection.

The lodge is built on a small scale and there is certainly no mass market tourism here. Group sizes are always limited to prevent unnecessary damage to the environment during activities. Their lodge has been crafted in sympathy with its surroundings and in traditional Swedish style.

There are energy efficient fixtures throughout the accommodation and the rooms are free from televisions as guests are encouraged to mingle and enjoy their surroundings rather than sit in their rooms.

The cuisine here is central to the guest experience and there is an exceptional focus on locally sourced ingredients and homemade breads and produce. They have won Slow Food awards which highlight their dedication to reducing their food miles and showcasing local products.

All activities are operated by expert guides who lead groups into wild terrain, they operate a strict ‘leave no trace’ policy on all activities and ensure that when exploring by snowmobile or sled, that marked and maintained routes are followed to reduce the erosion of the flora. There are strict activity restrictions in place which protect the Abisko National Park from any degradation from tourism.

All transfers are shared and guests are encouraged to arrive here by train as this is possible from either Stockholm or other destinations in Sweden; the lodge is just a short walk from the station.

Community

This vacation is based in locally owned and operated accommodation and solely uses local guides and activity providers. As a company we are always extremely conscious that tourism spend should remain in and benefit the local community and, in Abisko, this is certainly the case.

The local guides and activity providers are sustained by the tourism industry and this has allowed local people to forge a successful living in their home region, without having to move to urban centres in search of work.

As all produce served in the hotel is locally sourced where possible, then the tourism multiplier effect is very much in play from this vacation.

As part of the vacation our guests will get the chance to visit a small cultural centre which will provide and insight into the indigenous culture of the region, their traditions and heritage. We feel that an understanding of this is vital for any visitors traveling in Lapland.
