Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: India vacation, the Golden Triangle & Varanasi

Environment

In India we prioritise in small-scale, low impact accommodation, often using havelis which are usually historic buildings that have been maintained due to tourism. Our local agent was one of the first tour operators to ask the owners of these properties to open their homes to guests therefore supporting the trend of preserving these heritage buildings, and bringing income and jobs to small family-run hotels. Similarly we also try and use eco-friendly hotels where possible which have little impact on the environment.

Before departing on this trip we send our customers an informative document called 'Be a responsible traveler'. It gives our customers information advising them how to use as little water and energy as possible.

Although, we have some private transfers in this trip, we have added trains where possible which are a low-carbon alternative, and a great way to experience real India.

In our office in sunny Brighton we work hard to recycle as much as we possibly can. We even buy our paper off the same company we recycled it with resulting in a closed loop system. Every day at work the staff here are provided with a lunch that is locally sourced and we dispose of the food waste in a compost bin, meaning there is hardly any impact on the environment.

Community

In India we try to ensure that our tours are supporting the local people and bringing much needed income to local communities. For all sightseeing tours we use guides that have been trained by the Government of India. In culturally sensitive areas we make sure that the local guides are from the areas visited. In addition to this all staff are paid considerably more than the legal minimum making sure they can live a comfortable lifestyle. Our local office also has a policy of actively encouraging and helping reliable drivers to buy their own vehicles.

In this itinerary you get to visit the small town of Orchha. This isn't visited much by tourists and therefore having this incorporated in this trip brings much needed income to this community.

In order to make sure that we support responsible tourism we also send our departing customers some information about their upcoming trip to India. This includes more information about why customers should not encourage begging by giving money or gifts to young children. It also talks about the correct behaviour at temples and religious sites and some more advice on how you can dress appropriately whilst traveling in India.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing tigers (close-up!) in Rathambore

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Come with an open mind and leave your perceptions of normality behind. Indian drivers need a Good Horn, Good Brakes & Good Luck. Occasionally not for
the faint hearted.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly put lots of money into the local economy. Will it waterfall down to the extent it lefts the many below the poverty line, i doubt it makes much
difference.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Magical. The advertising gets it right "Incredible India". We had a driver that took great care of us to drive as safe as the conditions allowed, acted as guide
when he could and was certainly trustworthy. Our daily guides were knowledgeable, had interesting tales to tell and informative when our own curiosity needed that little bit extra.
