Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Borneo wildlife vacation, Sabah adventure

Environment

Our guides are highly trained, knowledgeable and experienced with wildlife viewing and they ensure all guests are fully briefed in viewing and photographing wildlife from safe distances, for both human and animal. We visit an orang utan rehabilitation centre that has been successfully relocating orphaned or injured orang utans for over twenty years, and a newly opened sun bear rehabilitation centre.

The trip visits two conservation areas in Sabah where we adhere to strict permits and regulations. Our staff brief guests on trekking regulations in protected forest areas, ensure the removal of all waste from campsites. In these areas, we bring boiler or filters water tanks for our guests, so plastic water bottle usage is kept to a minimum.

This trip uses no internal flights, ensuring our carbon footprint is as low as possible. Where we use boat travel, our river lodge uses smaller boats to reduce river bank erosion and never gets too close to wildlife on the land. The lodge also refills guests water bottle to reduce any plastic waste.

This trip also takes guests to an eco-jungle lodge where all buildings have been sustainably built and maintained with local materials, namely bamboo. The food is grown or bought locally and only vegetarian, energy is supplied from a hydroelectric generator and any non-biodegradable waste is removed from the rainforest environment.

Community

We never outsource to other companies but support local employment through our local office in Borneo. This ensures all staff adhere to our British Standards 8848 and are fully trained on our ethical stance. Through our office, we train and employ local staff to manage sales and trip logistics, guides and porters, with fair wages and equal opportunities for both genders. Our office staff, and other local experts on a consultation basis, have visited and worked with the homestay programs we support to improve their capacity as hosts, and further improve the tourist experience for both guest and host.

Through our company's partner charity, we support the remote Penan tribe and a reforestation project in Sarawak. As a company, we promote the destination as a sustainable tourism initiative, generating alternative sources of income through their homestays and employment as guides. The charity holistically supports this through bringing fundraising and volunteers to the villages to help improve homestay building standards, as well as supporting the tree planting project.

This trip also visits a homestay that runs in conjunction with a turtle hatchery project near the tip of Borneo. This homestay has brought employment and training opportunities to the village, widened turtle conservation education in the community and has given the women an avenue to sell their homemade crafts to a direct market.
