Responsible tourism: Greece bird watching vacation, Lake Kerkini

Environment

This trip is all about observing nature! It proves that tourism can be a significantly important tool for conservation, by respecting wildlife and biodiversity in every possible way!

Specifically:

* Wildlife species are not harvested, consumed, displayed, sold, or traded.

* No wildlife is held captive.

* The trip supports and contributes to biodiversity conservation, including natural protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value.

* Interactions with wildlife, taking into account cumulative impacts, do not produce adverse effects on the viability and behaviour of populations in the wild. Any disturbance of natural ecosystems is minimized.

* Information about and interpretation of the natural surroundings is provided to travelers, as well as explaining appropriate behaviour while visiting natural areas. In order to keep our environmental impact as low as possible we use group transportation (minibus & boat) and walk as much as possible.

Furthermore we give the option to offset carbon emissions of this trip and to support the local charity that supports the birds of Northern Greece called BirdWING. BirdWING (Birdwatching in Northern Greece) has been set up to raise awareness of birds in Greece and to raise money for the conservation and restoration of bird habitat in the region.

This is a trip to Kerkini Lake, a Nature 2000 area, wetland under RAMSAR convention and Important Bird Area. Unlike many other protected areas in Greece Kerkini Lake and surroundings is protected in an adequate manner and illegal activities that harm the environment are limited. This has to do with the fact that recently it became more popular as an eco-destination. Locals respect the wildlife and understand it brings in money.

Community

We are 100% local and a Greek based tour operator, thus preventing "leakage" from the local economy. One of our core values is to celebrate a diversity of place & culture whilst delivering you rich and authentic experiences at an affordable price.

You will visit an area that is hardly touched by tourism and thus offer you authentic experiences such as local traditional cuisine and local traditional architecture. We support the community in the following ways:

* Information about and interpretation of the local culture, and cultural heritage is provided to travelers.

* Local services and goods are purchased and offered, following fair-trade principles.

* Your expert bird guide is a local, from North Greece.

* Supporting local small entrepreneurs to develop and sell sustainable products that are based on the area’s nature, history and culture (including food and beverages, crafts, performance arts, agricultural products, etc.).

* Purchasing policies favour locally appropriate and ecologically sustainable products, including, food, beverages and consumables.

* Use of small family-run accommodation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The trip as a whole was memorable: well organized and all the expectations were met! Traveling around the lake with the good guide and the nice boat trip to
check out the pelicans was an exciting experience

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Even though the trip was perfect in all ways the experience can be even better when you manage to hit the exact bird migration peak (Spring time).

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The vacation had a 'local' feel and it gave me a nice experience to talk to the local people. The birding tourists are the main visitors in the Kerkini region so yes
the local people definitely benefit from it even though it is still a relatively unknown area to many people. There is potential for more. I hope that a part of the money i spent in this vacation reaches the right people who are trying to reduce the environmental impact and support the conservation. The mindset of the people in Greece towards the environment has room for improvement: i noticed that there is a lot of garbage around the Kerkini lake for example.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

From 0 -10 an 8.

On behalf of the team: thanks so very much for your feedback. We really appreciated you as a guest and hope to see you back one day. Perhaps during peak migration in spring on our Northern Greece Birdwatching Vacation.
