Responsible tourism: Luxury Costa Rica vacation
It is incredibly important to us to sustain the environment on the trips that we do to these countries. For example in Costa Rica, we work with El Silencio Hotel. It has a 5 Leaf Certification of Sustainable Tourism Award (CTC), an initiative led by the Costa Rican government to champion and encourage sustainability in the travel and tourism sector. They are also a member of the Network of Nature reserves. With over 200 members, they protect more than 140,000 hectares of Costa Rican Forest. El Silencio Lodge and Spa is in a 3500 acre private forest reserve where they have established a biological corridor connecting 2 national parks. They minimise waste, have a CO2 mitigation program, energy efficient lighting, use refillable water containers and eco-friendly cleaning products. On site, composting and recycling is carried out and electric carts are used for guests’ transport. Punta Islita Hotel is actively involved in scarlet macaw recovery and sea turtle protection.
At both Hotel Punta Islita and El Silencio Lodge and Spa they are careful to choose local staff and purchase supplies locally. Punta Islita worked carefully with their local community and neighbours when building the property in 1994. This has led to wildlife conservation, reforestation, and local employment opportunities. The hotel supports art programs and complementary education further provide empowering tools for the local communities and this region is thriving with a dynamic collective of travel professionals, community artists, and micro-entrepreneurs. We actively support community based projects. When creating our tailormade trips we always try to feature hotels or lodges that have a social or environmental project attached to them such as El Silencio and Punta Islita.
