Responsible tourism: Wildlife vacation in Costa Rica
On this trip, we visit several areas of natural beauty and ecological significance, including Tortuguero National Park, renowned for its biological diversity. Within the park, there are many different habitats supporting varied wildlife including swamps, rainforest, mangrove forests, beaches and lagoons. Through education of our travelers and support through entrance fees, we help ensure the continued protection of this precious natural area.
We use varied local transport, such as local buses, minibuses, boats and pooled taxi services. By sharing this widely-available transport we are able to reduce our impact on the local environment and reduce emissions while maximising our contact with local people.
We stay at locally owned accommodation throughout this tour. One of the most exciting places we visit is Tortuguero. Here we stay at All Rankinís Lodge, the Rankin family being one of the first settlers in Tortuguero. The accommodation is still locally owned, and the owner enjoys taking our clients around the local community, village and national park .
Our expert tour leaders also encourage our passengers to try different responsible optional excursions. For instance from Cahuita you can visit the Jaguar Rescue Centre, a rehabilitation and rescues centre with the goal of releasing wildlife back into the wild. The entry fees and tour money here goes back into the organisation and is a great example of sustainable tourism.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Seeing magnificent rainforest from high bridges on flanks of a volcano, seeing a turtle laying her eggs, giving bottle of milk to young spider, howler and capuchin monkeys at a rescue centre.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Don't miss out on tours which give you full experience of the natural history of Costa Rica.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think the money I paid for my tours helped support the conservation and wildlife work and that my tour helped the businesses of the hotel and restaurant owners. I am not sure my consumption of water and the waste I produced was good but as all hotels had signs to reduce water use and I was careful as I could be about waste, recycling where facilities allowed, I hope it was not too great. Obviously there is carbon to consider from the flights...
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Very good - what I'd hoped and more. Tour leader was excellent, other members were nice and thoroughly enjoyed.
