Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: South Africa vacation & luxury safari

Environment

- The lodges we use for safaris are all eco-friendly and highly responsible, leaving as small a footprint as possible. This might be through the use of solar power or using as much locally acquired resources and produce as possible. Luxury travel also follows a low-impact, high-profit model, which is crucial in conservation.

- Lodges protect the surrounding land and wildlife by streaming the profits gained through tourism back into the environment and community. This is often seen in stepped-up anti-poaching measures, for example.

- Sabi Sands is a private reserve with strict rules on wildlife interaction - for example, a maximum of three vehicles around each sighting, which makes the animals feel less harassed.

- The guides are all experts in the local environment and wildlife, knowledge which they pass on to their guests. Through education, we help our clients to become more aware and in tune with the natural world.

- For each of our Africa trips sold, we donate money to a conservation project based in South Africa and Botswana. Our conservation charity is Rhinos Without Borders (rhinoswithoutborders.com), which aims to move 100 rhinos from South Africa, where poaching is high, to the relative safety of Botswana.

Community

- Our guides, drivers and rangers are locals, which helps us support and sustain the local economy through tourism in a long-term way. It also gives our clients a more authentic experience of a destination and a chance to meet local people, aiding their knowledge of the place and culture. This understanding is key for people to get the most out of a trip and to firm up relationships between locals and tourists.

- The hotels and lodges we use are staffed by locals, which follows on from our own policy regarding local guides. This serves to empower the community and create long-term, stable and well-paid jobs.

- Most of the hotels and lodges we use have their own community projects that they support with their own profits.

- For each of our Africa trips sold, we donate money to a community charity in South Africa. The community charity we support is Uthando (uthandosa.org), which funds community development projects in some of the poorest areas in and around Cape Town. Most recently we helped fund a daycare centre for over 60 children, all of whom previously had nowhere to go during the day.
