Responsible tourism: Great Wildebeest migration safari, Kenya
We run on solar power with a backup generator for those times of no sunlight & a booster system for water heating fueled by Eco briquettes made from waste. We use energy saving bulbs, recycle our waste organic on site in a series of composting pits, plastic & tins are sent back to Nairobi for recycling. We have Eco composting toilets whereby the liquid waste & all waste water is collected then used in our tree plantation. Eagle View, Mara Naboisho is constructed with local materials, running on solar, hot water & energy systems with a back up generator, energy saving bulbs, recycling of non organic waste. All plastic is collected and transported for off-site recycling. Bio-degradable waste is converted to compost for our vegetable garden. You can leave a positive footprint and reduce your carbon footprint by planting a tree in our tree plantation.
Svein Wilhelmsen founded the company in 1998, following a life-changing meeting with an old Maasai, Chief Ole Taek. Around the fireplace one evening the respected Maasai elder told a worrying tale about the threats facing his people. Inspired and concerned, Svein Wilhelmsen founded a company that would care, a company that would leave a positive footprint in the places they operated and have a positive impact on the people they worked with. Since the beginning we have partnered closely with the Maasai people to develop models for conserving nature and empowering the local community. Over the years we have established and supported community programs aimed at enhancing capacity, raising awareness, improving living conditions, and wildlife development. Over 95% of camp staff are from the local Maasai community therefore your vacation empowers and enriches the community within which we operate our camps. Fair-trade: our company promotes women groups from the local community in developing and retailing exquisite beaded and leather merchandise. Purchase a product from our gift shops and receive a personalized message on the woman who designed the merchandise. Empowerment and awareness through scholarships in local schools and the Koiyaki Guiding School (the only guiding school in Mara). The local community receive income from tourism activities in the Mara Talek and Mara Naboisho Conservancies.
