Responsible tourism: Sweden treehouse vacation, Grano Beckasin

Environment

The supplier has been awarded with the Swedish Eco-Tourism Society label Nature's Best, which has the objective to give travelers more and better opportunities to book environmentally safe, quality labelled ecotours. The hosts define their own standard as eco-premium which is reflected in everything they do.

Quality and great care for the environment are some lead words for Granö Beckasin. This is reflected in all activities, from construction to food in the restaurant. Even in the construction process, the provider has taken the utmost account of the nature. All materials used to build the hotel can be recycled. The insulation is made of spruce and there is no plastic in the walls. The heat source for the hotel is ground heat.

Organic is a lead word in their cooking and both the café and restaurant serve food that is produced by local and organic raw materials. The activities cause minimal impact on nature and are designed to give the visitors a thorough insight into surrounding nature and wildlife - whether it is moose watching or learning about the herbs that grow in the nearby marshlands.

Several important successes have already been achieved, including a nomination for the Swedish Grand Tourism Award and a growing number of international visitors who book timber rafting, bike tours and various guided experiences - all of which are low carbon ways of exploring the local environment.

Community

This vacation really has the local community at its heart (and behind its very creation). The brilliant idea of the Bird's Nest hotel came about through the threat of a local primary school closing down. The community needed more jobs to attract families to settle down and bring more life to the village.

One man's love of beautiful birds inspired a local family to create a unique taste of Southern Lappish nature for travelers. Of course the resort needed activities so when they met a young woman who wanted to start her own husky farm after several years of working at a large resort mushing huskies, a husky farm was established at the resort.

During berry picking and mushroom seasons locals offer tours to come and forage on the resort's own bulletin board. Guests can join tours spontaneosly with locals and learn more about local life and foraging in the nature. This is a fantastic way to meet locals and learn about their life. The resort also works closely with local forest research and offer guests a unique insight into the surrounding wilderness.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Spending half a day snowmobiling with Olof and cooking and eating in the jungle. Amazing experience!!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

We did an extra activity, the northern light hunt which I think it wasn't worth the money - 1200 SEK per person. It was something that you could do yourself for free. Walking for 5-10 minutes from the lodge and then waiting for it. Maybe if it was more adventures, more fun would have been worth it!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes doing some activities i.e. Husky sledding, snowmobiling, ... definitely helped locals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

An amazing experience in the cold and snow warmed up with the hospitality of the staff and locals.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It was very early in the winter season when I went, so there weren't many other guests. There also wasn't enough snow to do some of the activities, but the staff
were really friendly and took excellent care of me. They organised alternative activities and even took me around the husky kennels to meet the dogs and
have a quick go on a sledge despite the snow not being deep enough in the forest to do a proper trip. The birds nest was wonderful - the views over the lake are stunning. And the food was absolutely delicious.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't be afraid to talk to the staff about what you want to get out of your time there. They were able to help me go see concerts at the local church and visit an
animal park in Lycksele, none of which was pre-arranged, but really made my vacation special. Some of the hiking trails around the lake are a little precarious
in the snow, so be careful, but definitely give them a go. They are well marked through the forest and worth the effort for the views and the feeling of being in
Narnia.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

If you spend any time talking to the staff you discover just how integral Granö Beckasin is to the local community. All of the staff are locals, the food is locally
sourced and all the activities are run through local companies. It's really nice to see a community come together and take pride in what they do.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I loved my time in Granö. I needed to get away from the city and relax, which is exactly what I did. I was traveling alone, but the staff were so friendly that I
never felt like I had to be alone if I didn't want to be. I would definitely recommend it there if you like peace and beautiful countryside and good food.
