Small group family vacation

This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families traveling in a group of up to 20 people (3-5 families). The trips are great value, often with lots of included activities or sightseeing and some meals (dependent on the itinerary). They are created by people with families, for people with families, and are a great way for you and your children to meet new people and discover the world together! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves.

On these Family Adventures, families of two will be roomed in a twin room, parties of three will be roomed in a triple room, fours will be roomed in two twins and families of five will have a triple and a twin, etc. This operator tends to use small, locally owned properties throughout their trips and accommodation will be en suite unless specified otherwise. It will be clean, functional, well located for your adventures and most importantly, family friendly. There will be swimming opportunities nearby where ever possible, either in pools or the sea. Some trips contain more adventurous overnights such as jungle stays, camping in the desert, sleeping on deck of traditional style boats or a night in a local homestay Ė please be aware that facilities will be basic on these occasions if your trip contains these aspects. All accommodation is named prior to travel.

Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Family vacation in Costa Rica

On this trip: Our policy of staying in locally owned hotels, having local guides and group leaders and using transport owned and operated by local people wherever possible is continued in Costa Rica. Our small groups (approx. 16 people) have a minimal impact on the fragile environment. All tour guides are responsible for ensuring that the guests understand the nature of the environment that they are in and minimise the impact that they may have. For every person who travels with us to Costa Rica, a contribution is made to the Fundacion Neotropica, which protects the rainforest and educates people about conservation. Our local agent is committed to responsible travel. We employ local guides and leaders.

Responsible code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this tripís responsibility in your trip notes.

Helping to minimise negative impact: All of our customers are invited to offset their international flight emissions. Contributions go to the Blue Ventures Carbon Offset program, a non-profit organisation which provides solar stoves for subsistence communities in Madagascar, benefiting the people and protecting the environment. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting of your in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

Giving something back: We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. You as a customer choose where these funds are used from a shortlist of nominated projects Ė so it really is YOUR foundation.

Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Our guide, Erick of from the vacation providers, knew almost everything about his beautiful country. We will remember all the wildlife encounters from Eyelash pit vipers to American crocodiles, the iridescent hummingbirds, the noisy monkeys. All the shades of green in the serene, cloud forests of Monteverde. All the spectacular sunsets. Seeing a sloth up close on a boat trip in Tortugero. Watching green sea turtles on a beach at midnight, Rafting down the Sarapiqui river trying not to capsize. The beautiful beach at Manuel Antonio. The rice and beans and fried plantains. The good traveling companions.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Invest in Rainforest Publications field guides, they are great value and incredibly useful. Visit the hummingbird garden at the Selvatura adventure park, Monteverde (after, or instead of, the zip wire). There is also a forest trail and reptile and amphibian exhibits where our guide Juan Carlos was very knowledgeable. The chocolate farm in Arenal is educational and great fun. Take quick drying clothes and enough socks as it is difficult to get things dry in the humid climate. Take a waterproof coat as it can rain spectacularly, although we only got wet twice in the rainy season. Take enough cash as all the additional tours prefer dollars to credit cards. Take a torch as it gets dark early.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All our guides were local and had a wealth of knowledge about the biodiversity of the ecosystems especially on a boat tour in Tortuguero and a night tour in Monteverde. We visited the Sea turtle conservancy project in Tortuguero. We picked up litter from the beaches. We stayed in a family run lodge in Sarapiqui. Costa Rican Trails have a sustainability award.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We would definitely recommend this vacation. We travelled a lot but it wasn't too tiring, even for the children, as we didn't have to worry about anything. Erick, and our driver Jose, arranged all the additional tours we wanted to do; rafting, turtle watching and a night safari and Erick took us out at 5.45 am for a specialist bird watching walk. They even took us to a laundry to get our clothes dry and bought birthday cakes for members of the group... twice!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Tortuguero National Park-beautuful accomodation in the middle of the rainforest with howler monkeys and loads of birdlife very close-boat trip really quiet and special. Zipwiring incredible- Quite physically demanding but worth it as really long-I think 18 in total zip wires and run across a valley with the rainforest beneath you-Amazing.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Great for teenagers- Busy itinary and good mix of wildlife walks/boat trips where you get really close and the adventure trips white water rafting/canopy walk and zipwiring- Which is incredible

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes the guide is very professional/well informed and respectful of the environmental issues.Costa rican people are very welcoming and friendly-they are encouraging tourism but protective of the environment.
