Responsible tourism: Tanzania tailor made vacation, Saadani, Selous and Zanzibar

Visitors spending three nights in Saadani national park are taught about the Saadani elephant groups, the challenges they face and the measures taken to support them. Information from collared elephants has been essential in identifying corridors to other parks which need protection. The lodge used in Selous has been at the centre of elephant protection in the reserve, and is represented by board membership within TEPS.

Saadani also has a marine park protecting green turtles, and families may visit nests as the hatchlings begin their long journey. The marine park has been supported with personnel, promotional material, GPS’s and plans are in place to tag hatchlings and identify their greatest threats.

All non-biodegradable waste produced on the tour is bagged and sent to Dar es Salaam for recycling. Drinking water in Sable Mountain comes from a natural spring, and visitors are sold metal flasks to refill from filters around the lodge, the proceeds from which go directly to Care With A View Foundation.

The lodges used during the tour are run entirely on solar power. Buildings and fittings at our lodge in Saadani have been built with timber from wrecked boats found on the beach and from coconut palms felled by bull elephants. We cultivate new trees to keep the elephants coming and the recycling process alive.

Whilst in Saadani and Selous Game Reserves, the tour visits the communities that benefit from Doctors on Safari, which provides extensive medical and dental care to the areas. Qualified doctors and medical students have been brought to the communities around Selous and Saadani since 2011 and work to improve healthcare. They have introduced new medical record systems, funded full time nursing staff, provided important new equipment and training, and most recently, provided over 1000 people with free dental treatment from experienced British dentists, whilst training 14 new dental officers in Districts where otherwise there was none.

The Saadani Elephant Project has been instrumental in identifying points of conflict with human populations and helped target where aid is required. This has led to significant changes in government plans to support adversely affected communities including major infrastructural development.

The Swahili Coast tour is operated in conjunction with the Care With a View Foundation which supports the Saadani Elephant Project, Doctors on Safari, The Tanzanian Elephant Protection Society (TEPS) and Kerege Orphanage.

Many of the local staff have had houses built using soft company loans, and several have taken up an ownership scheme which offers cheap, or in some cases free, shares in the company.
