Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Costa Rica luxury vacation

- Costa Rica is one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world with a high use of renewable resources, including hydroelectric and wind power. As well as being one of the most environmentally aware countries in the world, it is the greenest country in Latin America. By supporting this country in encouraging our clients to visit, we are supporting the practice of green and sustainable energy.

- Guests can visit the Carara National Park and La Paz Waterfall Gardens where a local guide will educate them about the local flora, fauna and wildlife and how they can help support its preservation. They can go on nature walks where guides ensure they understand the local issues and that the wildlife and natural surroundings are left untouched and undisturbed.

- We use lodges that employ ethical and responsible practices, with a small footprint and an emphasis on educating guests about the surrounding environment. This improves awareness and individual responsibility. Our lodges and hotels are also environmentally sound, relying on renewable energy where possible and local produce and resources. Peace Lodge in the Coffee Valley is set in a private eco-park and reserve, where guests can explore the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, an aviary, butterfly gardens and Jungle Cat Centre. The lodge is built using local materials, and they offer hikes with local guides around the reserve. Latitude 10 resort on the Nicoya Peninsula has been built with local materials including bamboo and almond wood and they offer many excursions to the Cabo Blanco National Park nearby.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a wildlife project in Costa Rica. Our environmental charity in Costa Rica is Kids Saving the Rainforest (, which rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals.

- Our guides are locals, which helps us support and sustain the local economy through tourism in a long-term way. It also gives our clients a more authentic experience of a destination and a chance to meet local people, aiding their knowledge of the place and culture. This understanding is key for people to get the most out of a trip and to firm up relationships between locals and tourists.

- Guests go on a tour with a local guide of the coffee plantation in the Coffee Valley where they learn about the traditional techniques used and can sample and purchase coffee made by locals.

- Throughout their stay in Costa Rica, our guests can go on numerous excursions with local guides including horse riding, white water rafting, specialist guided walks, visit the Carara National Park and Arenal Volcano - this supports local guides and businesses and helps educate guests about the local practises and customs of the areas.

- We organise meals in local restaurants and cafes to ensure guests experience the local cuisine and culture. They are also provided with a detailed list of local restaurants, cafes and particular foods to try. As well as this, guests are given a list of local stores where they can buy artisan handcrafts and gifts, and also local not-for-profit organisations they can support.

- The hotels and lodges we use are staffed by locals, which follows on from our own policy of only using local guides. This serves to empower the community and create long-term, stable and well-paid jobs. Finca Rosa Blanca hotel in the Coffee Valley is set on a private coffee plantation where guests can stroll through the plantation and learn about the local industry and sample some of the produce. The Marriott San Jose is also set in a large coffee plantation where guests can learn about the local industry.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a school charity based in Ecuador. Our school charity in Ecuador is the Condor Trust (, which helps encourage low-income families to send their children to school. The funds provide uniforms, school materials and books for the children.
