Responsible tourism: Hidden Costa Rica luxury tour

- Costa Rica is one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world with a high use of renewable resources, including hydroelectric and wind power. As well as being one of the most environmentally aware countries in the world, it is the greenest country in Latin America. By supporting this country in encouraging our clients to visit, we are supporting the practice of green and sustainable energy.

- Guests visit Turrialba, Pacuare, and Arenal where local guides will educate them about the local flora, fauna and wildlife and how they can help support its preservation. They can go on nature walks where guides ensure they understand the local issues and that the wildlife and natural surroundings are left untouched and undisturbed.

-On this trip guests raft from Siquerras along the Pacuare Lodge instead of being transferred by car. They will be led by expert local guides who will educate them about the flora and fauna on their journey.

- We use lodges that employ ethical and responsible practices, with a small footprint and an emphasis on educating guests about the surrounding environment. This improves awareness and individual responsibility. Our lodges and hotels are also environmentally sound, relying on renewable energy where possible and local produce and resources. The Pacuare Jungle Lodge is set in the natural Pacuare Reserve, during the three days here guests go on canopy tours, and nature hikes with a resident naturalist. The Arenal Kioro has 27 acres of gardens and National Park which are exclusive to its guests. They organise numerous activities to educate the guests about the local environment.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a wildlife project in Costa Rica. Our environmental charity in Costa Rica is Kids Saving the Rainforest (kidssavingtherainforest.org), which rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals.

- Our guides are locals, which helps us support and sustain the local economy through tourism in a long-term way. It also gives our clients a more authentic experience of a destination and a chance to meet local people, aiding their knowledge of the place and culture. This understanding is key for people to get the most out of a trip and to firm up relationships between locals and tourists.

-Throughout their stay in Costa Rica, guests are taken to local restaurants and cafes to try out the local cuisine and experience the culture associated to their food. They are also provided with a detailed list of local restaurants and cafes that are run by locals, as well as shops that sell local handicrafts and not-for-profit organisations they can help.

-We organise a huge array of activities for guests from nature walks the in the national parks to surf lessons, horse riding and hikes. These are all run by local guides, therefore supporting the local community.

- The hotels and lodges we use are staffed by locals, which follows on from our own policy of only using local guides. This serves to empower the community and create long-term, stable and well-paid jobs. At the Pacuare Jungle Lodge guests will have the chance to meet the local indigenous people and learn about their customs, traditions and culture. The Hacienda Tayutic in Turrialba has a great choice of activities and tours run by the owner and local staff who have a profound knowledge of the area and are keen to share this with their guests. The Marriott San Jose is also set in a large coffee plantation where guests can learn about the local industry. Xandari hotel which is outside of San Jose is also set on forty acres of plantation gardens and the organic garden supplies the hotel's restaurant. Nayara Hotel and Gardens in Arenal offers numerous activities with local guides from volcano tours, hikes, horse riding and white water rafting.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a school charity based in Ecuador. Our school charity in Ecuador is the Condor Trust (condortrust.org), which helps encourage low-income families to send their children to school. The funds provide uniforms, school materials and books for the children.
