Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Myanmar walking vacation to Inle lake

This is a low-impact walking itinerary designed to accommodate small groups and private travelers, and not a seat-in-bus tour. Your itinerary will see you visit a number of protected areas as well as regions of great natural beauty, including Inle Lake and the Shan Highlands, alongside sites of historical interest in Kalaw and Yangon. These natural and cultural heritage sites are in large part dependent on the revenues generated by tourism for their preservation, meaning your visit will play a small but real role in helping to preserve them.

During your itinerary you will stay in small lodges and locally-owned homestays, helping to reduce your impact on the environment and support local business.

We employ local tour guides who will help you to travel responsibly through the fragile environments visited during your itinerary.

Carbon offsetting We provide a monthly donation to the Carbon Neutral fund to partially offset the emissions generated by our travel business.

Your itinerary will see you visit the Shan Highlands of central Myanmar. In this remote region, ethnic minorities still account for a large proportion of the population. Your tour will provide you with opportunities to engage with these communities, visiting remote Taung Yo, Palaung, Intha and Pao settlements during the course of your itinerary, and staying in a number of local homestays between Kalaw and Inle Lake. It is important to remember that tourism in Myanmar is not as developed as in other parts of South East Asia, and many of these communities will not have encountered foreign tourists on a large scale - they are not engaged in "ethnotourism", and the locals will not put on a show. They are real, living communities, many of which see few visitors.

With this in mind, it is important to approach indigenous communities in such a way that respects their culture, even as you engage with and show interest in it. This means extending common courtesies such as dressing appropriately when visiting religious sites, not taking photos without first asking for permission, and ensuring that you do not leave behind litter or in anyway mar the environment that they depend on.

We employ local tour guides who are mindful of local customs and traditions and will guide you on the proper decorum in each situation.

The money generated by your tour through entrance fees, nights spent at locally-owned and staffed accommodation such as village homestays, tour guide fees and your patronage of local shops and businesses will also help to support the communities you visit.
