Responsible tourism: Costa Rica luxury beach and activity vacation, 8 days

We believe tourism should be educational and sustainable, as well as entertaining. We designed this trip to contribute minimal impact to the local environment with positive benefits to the local communities. All guides follow strict “green ethics”. Reusable water bottles are provided in an effort to encourage less waste and discourage the need for plastic throw-away bottles.

Our local tour operator was among the first in Costa Rica to receive the Certificate of Sustainable Tourism designation, awarded by the Costa Rican Tourism Board. This award is given to companies who consistently achieve or exceed their standards of environmental sustainability, business ethics and cultural sensitivity. They support conservation projects in Costa Rica ranging from rural development programs to sea turtle nest protection and community education programs. Their efforts have been recognized with an Ecotourism Excellence Award from Conservation International. Local personnel participated in a Sustainable Practices workshop given by Rainforest Alliance to learn how to minimize their carbon footprint.

All activities included on this itinerary are ecologically responsible and low-impact: snorkeling, hiking, tubing, canyoning, canopy tours, surfing. Guides always practice ‘Leave No Trace’ ethics and give clear and committed instructions for interacting with nature and wildlife with efforts to preserve and leave undisturbed the beauty for generations to enjoy.

Rio Perdido Hotel is located in a very dry zone of the country and even though they have plenty of water resources on their property they have decided to protect them instead of exploit them. They have worked on the reforestation of the rare ecosystem that surrounds them. So far they have planted thousands of endemic trees that will help the ecosystem to remain healthy. All the energy utilized on this hotel comes from clean source: the Miravalles Geothermal Power Plant, and for their back up energy they rely on natural gas. All the food comes from local producers and in 2016, they started their Permaculture Project which will produce their own organically grown herbs, spices and a variety of veggies and fruits. All rooms at the hotel have been specifically design with proper insulation and passive channeling of natural air currents.

Latitude 10 Resort is part of the Cayuga Hotel chain, which is well-known in the area for it sustainable practices. They only have 5 guest rooms. Every room has a 3 liter per flush toilet which helps to reduce water consumption on the property. Also, they have their own wastewater treatment system and by planting endemic plants, avoid the need for irrigation. The food served at this hotel is mostly locally-sourced, seafood is from sustainable fishing, only grass-fed beef and hormone-free chicken is served. They don't have air conditioning in their bungalows as they take full advantage of the ocean breezes and cross-ventilation. All water in the rooms is heated by solar panels.

Sustainable tourism should improve the lives of local people. This ensures growth to the local economy and support to the community. For instance, most of the food served in both hotels is locally produced.

90% of the Rio Perdido staff is from Bagaces, the local town where this hotel is located. Also, the food that is prepared at the restaurant comes from local farmers, which helps the local economy. Also, they support the local community by participating in local festivals, sporting events and make efforts to improve the quality of local education.

Latitude 10 created a program called Building for the Future, a program that helps improve school infrastructure and provide needed school supplies. They prefer to hire local staff, because they can give closer cultural experience to the clients and because they want to support the community.
