Our local partner in Corfu and ourselves are committed to preserving the natural environment in the areas that we visit. By their very nature, walking tours are among the most sustainable and environmentally friendly forms of travel today, relying on man power rather than vehicular power and producing a much smaller carbon footprint.
This self-guided walking vacation gives you numerous opportunities to experience the natural environment of Corfu such as the protected hydro/biotopes of Lake Korission and Lake Antinioti.
By showing an interest in the natural heritage of Corfu, and providing revenue in order to visit these locations, you are providing the local people and governments with incentives to protect these areas. Indeed, in the case of Issos beach which has recently been found to provide a significant breeding area for the loggerhead sea turtle, our partner, along with local wildlife organisations, is in the process of getting this breeding site turned into a protected area.
Our local partner in Corfu also uses locally grown food throughout the tour, reducing the carbon footprint, and recycles in the office wherever possible.
Our local partner in Corfu and ourselves are passionate about giving back to the communities in the areas that we visit. This self-guided walking vacation gives you numerous opportunities to experience the culture, both old and current in this region.
With numerous side routes to historic sites of interest such as the Byzantine castles of ‘Gardiki’ and ‘Angelocastro’, sites which rely on visitor donations for their preservation. Opportunities also exist to visit the locally owned, ancient vineyard at the Theotoky Estate where one can purchase locally produced wine and olive oil, as well as learn about their production.
Opportunities abound where you can purchase locally made handicrafts such as olive-wood crafts in Krini village, and the Agios Athanassios monastery where local nuns produce frescoes of Byzantine art, candles, olive oil soaps and creams made from locally grown herbs.
All accommodation and recommended tavernas on this trip are locally owned and run, providing you with numerous opportunities to interact with the local people as well as giving back to the local people and their economy. Tavernas recommended on the tour also provide you with the opportunity to sample traditional Corfiot cuisine.
