How this vacation makes a difference

Egypt is an extraordinary country and exploring it will get you travelers there with the locals, learning about their way of life and supporting as many local communities as possible. Most of the accommodation is in locally owned, small guesthouses. Local group leaders provide a perspective on life in Egypt and local guides are used at major sites.

The itinerary includes a boat trip on the Nile River in a traditional felucca. This supports an ancient mode of transport as well as supporting the Nubian crew in their way of life. The trip also includes a visit to a Nubian village where we share a traditional meal. Travelers can see local women baking sunburnt bread in the same way their great grandmothers would have and listen to men play traditional music.

Travelers visit Animal Care in Egypt (ACE) in Luxor, an organisation promoting the care of all animals from dogs to donkeys. ACE provides veterinary services as well as teaching local animal owners how to care for their animals to give them a longer, healthier life. Travelers are encouraged to donate to the charity so they can continue their work and education.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Hot air ballooning at sunrise, meeting the donkeys on landing to ride to the valley of the Kings & going into the tombs, all on the final day!!

Cruising the Nile on Egypt adventure holiday

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

a) Do all the side trips, including the long trip to Abu Simbel (the early rise & long drive there & back are more than compensated by the temples)
b) expect to be hastled constantly but join in with them sometimes, you'll get a good response back.
c) the Egyptian people are warm & friendly & I never met any animosity towards us.
d) try & get lots of small change, you'll need it for constant tipping!!
e) take some hand cleansing gel, especially for the felucca trip!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We all used local shops & restaurants that we wouldn't have on a cruise liner trip, as well as staying in the local hotels, etc. so I would expect the local economy to benefit & also traveling overnight on the trains will help. There was nothing I saw which I felt would impact on the environment.
