Small group family vacation

This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families traveling in a group of up to 20 people (3-5 families). The trips are great value, often with lots of included activities or sightseeing and some meals (dependent on the itinerary). They are created by people with families, for people with families, and are a great way for you and your children to meet new people and discover the world together! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves.

On these Family Adventures, families of two will be roomed in a twin room, parties of three will be roomed in a triple room, fours will be roomed in two twins and families of five will have a triple and a twin, etc. This operator tends to use small, locally owned properties throughout their trips and accommodation will be en suite unless specified otherwise. It will be clean, functional, well located for your adventures and most importantly, family friendly. There will be swimming opportunities nearby where ever possible, either in pools or the sea. Some trips contain more adventurous overnights such as jungle stays, camping in the desert, sleeping on deck of traditional style boats or a night in a local homestay – please be aware that facilities will be basic on these occasions if your trip contains these aspects. All accommodation is named prior to travel.

Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Family vacation in Italy

Responsible mission: As adventure travelers we relish and celebrate the diversity of the world. We also recognise our obligation to protect the environments that we explore. Our aim is to tread lightly, whilst contributing to maintain the world’s culture and nature, and most importantly to engage the help of all our customers to utilise the potential of tourism as a tool to aid sustainable development. We believe that responsible travelers are welcome in the places that they visit.

On this trip: Using public transport throughout the region, we are also staying in locally owned hotels. We finish our visit at an villa in the hills above Sorrento. It’s also the family home for dogs, chickens, goats. You’ll get a real taste of Italian family life here, as well as maybe some of the jams, olive oil, vegetables or wine that are produced here…!

Responsible code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Helping to minimise negative impact:
All of our customers are invited to offset their international flight emissions. Contributions go to the Blue Ventures Carbon Offset program, a non-profit organisation which provides solar stoves for subsistence communities in Madagascar, benefiting the people and protecting the environment. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting of your in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

Giving something back: We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. You as a customer choose where these funds are used from a shortlist of nominated projects – so it really is YOUR foundation.

Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Who can not be amazed by the historical sites? So great to see the sites you have read about and seen pictures of. Not enough time spent there but I guess with younger kids 2 hours is the most they can do in Pompeii. (Get your kids to read the roman mystery series if they say they are not interested in history!)

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Book a few days extra at a hotel so that you can go back and look again at Pompeii now you know where it is and how to get around.Travel sick? Take anti-sickness pills as the roads are not straight!Mosquitos can be an issue.
July is HOT and it does affect what you can do. I know it is the school vacations but you may want to go another time.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, local cars and hotels were used and you did not just feel like a number on a large trip. Small group means that you can really get local knowledge from your guide.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent. Never been on a led vacation before and it was amazing - no stress as
everything taken care of but still room for some choices. Where next?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Climbing Vesuvius and the Capri boat trip.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

You will be doing quite a bit of walking but nothing too hard and there are a lot of Mosquitos too so have repellent with you.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We went to a small restaurant a few times which was nice to support and the hotel in sorrento was smaller than many and a lovely place too - it wasn't one of the huge ones - I can't say the vacation supported conservation particularly but yes I think our money went to local businesses.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Great.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The most exciting for me was being in places of unforgettable beauty and rich in history and sharing the experience with my granddaughter. The last three days spent at the farm together with other participants was very enjoyable for all, kids and adults and left us with good memories and we gained new friends.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Travel light! You are going to carry your own luggage at all occasions.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I supposed it did, especially at the farm in Anacapri, but not more than other tourists who spent their money on food and souvenirs.

On the other hand, our guide made sure we did not leave any traces behind us in the nature.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The vacation in Italy was the 2nd organized by Responsibletravel and I am recommending your company to all my friends and family members. Looking forward for the next adventure!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whole trip was memorable for the camaraderie, the knowledge of the guide and the food at the agroturismo farm.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared to be flexible and have good walking trainers as some of the walking is on uneven shingle, not suitable for hiking sandals

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We were very concerned that the guide had not been pad for previous trips by the tour company and this was very embarrassing for us to find this out by accident. The use of local trains and buses as good and the stay on the farm was really enjoyable.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The vacation was a great family vacation. The hotel in Naples was poor and its location was not the best and made one feel very uneasy. It would have been better to stay on the edge of Naples in a better location and travel in by bus or train. The rooms in Naples were poor, with very poor showers and air conditioning. It didn't give a great start to the vacation and didn't feel like value for money. On the other hand the farm was superb. Rustic but with excellent food, very hospitable and friendly staff who made you feel as if you were a guest in their home, not just a tourist.

Read the operator's response here:

We were pleased to see you enjoyed the family vacation, especially the agriturismo. It truly is a great, homely place. All properties on this trip have been personally vetted by our Italian Product Manager and so we know them to be of a good standard for our vacations. The hotel in Naples was chosen for its location close to the train station and bus stops, which means it is easy for families to get to the hotel when they arrive and it saves time on getting to sights and enables more time to enjoy them. This tour uses lots of local transport as it's the best way of experiencing a country and so we thought that this hotel would make the best choice in Naples, given its close proximity to the stations. Following this season, however, we will be reviewing our choice of hotels, we will closely analyse our choice in Naples and, if we can find a more suitable family option, we will of course consider this to make a good vacation even better!
