Small group vacation
This is a 'small group adventure' - you will be sharing your experiences with like minded people. Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 11 persons, a genuinely small group. Experience has taught us that smaller groups are less intrusive to local cultures and environments whilst allowing more interaction with local people. Furthermore it means greater flexibility on a day to day basis and on a social level it proves to be fun. Whether you are traveling alone or with friends/family its good value, and a great way to meet new people! The intention is to travel as a group of friends rather than a typical tour group, so don't expect stick-on name badges or any following the umbrella.

How this vacation makes a difference

We work closely with The Penang Heritage Trust to organize our tour of some of the sites of Chinatown. The Heritage Trust provides a sensitive look at the culture and the history of the region. By our continued patronage of the service we contribute to the upkeep of the organization, which helps preserve the country's culture and educates its visitors to understand the genuine Penang.

For our two-day expedition into the little known Kenong Rimba Forest Reserve, we are guided through the jungle by indigenous tribes-people known as the Orang-Asli. Their intimate knowledge of the jungle makes for perfect guidance, while allowing our passengers to have a fuller understanding of the ethnic make-up of the region.

Information: Providing suitable, relevant information for our customers; to help them to gain a wider understanding of our style of tourism that focuses on learning, genuine interaction with the local communities, reciprocity and cultural exchange processes. To be aware of the potential impact of tourism on the local society, culture and environment, and to behave and dress appropriately with a respect and appreciation for local customs, mores and traditions and a respect for the ecology of areas visited. Our guides and leaders thus facilitate communication of our values to both travelers and local communities, educating them in sustainable tourism practices

Group sizes: By limiting groups to small sizes we aim to reduce the impact on both local communities and the environment whilst allowing for greater genuine interaction with said communities. It also results in a higher guide/customer ratio thus greater facility for supervision and individual assistance and allows us to use smaller hotels and restaurants and employ the services of more genuinely ‘local’ operators perhaps not otherwise well equipped for larger groups.

Destinations: We combine the well known tourist sites with many off-the-beaten-track, rarely visited destinations thus diverting tourist revenue and contact with responsible tourism into areas not usually benefiting as well as providing a more authentic view of the region visited.

Local products: As much as possible we aim to employ local personnel, (guides, drivers, agents etc), use local restaurants and smaller privately owned accommodation. Customers are also encouraged to buy and use local products and services as much as possible in order to support and stimulate the local economy.

Instruction: By explaining our methods and the reasons behind them local agents, guides and hotels are encouraged by us to adopt further responsible tourism practices themselves and guides and drivers are provided with additional training in this respect.

Story of the vacation provider

This family-run company started in 1999 after the director, Mark, spent many years researching guide books in Asia and decided he could put together more exciting itineraries. His passion for the diversity and character of Asia is reflected in the unique, locally-owned places that the tours visit and travel groups are kept small so that closer interaction with their hosts is possible. Although Mark could happily survive for weeks on jam sandwiches while sleeping under the stars, he realises not all customers want this and goes out of his way to ensure all facilities used are pleasantly comfortable, clean, warm and welcoming.

Malaysia tour, Coast to Coast

Reviewed 07 Aug 2006 by Kate Hemming2 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We had some amazing experiences. The most memorable part of the vacation was snorkelling and trying scuba diving in the Perenthian Islands off the East coast of Malaysia. Beautiful scenery, welcoming people and a real chance to recharge the batteries and relax!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

This tour is rather 'over guided'. We felt a bit limited and restricted by the tight timetable. Not quite what we expected.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Rather disappointing - our rep was Australian, not the local we had hoped for. Lots of traveling in taxis and buses rather defeated the object of an environmentally-friendly vacation.

4. Any other comments?

Malaysia was wonderful but the trip itself was disappointingly run. We'd go to Malaysia again, but on our own next time! So only two stars I'm afraid.

Thanks for your notes and please be assured that we do value customer feedback.

Transport: As a company we believe that we show great social and environmental awareness and the tour you undertook reflects this. Obviously there is a negative impact in any travel (the main impact being that of the intercontinental flight) and as we said earlier by the nature of touring, bus/taxi transport will be necessary. As noted on our itinerary, we do walking tours whenever possible and practical but against this we have to balance the comfort of people who are ostensibly on vacation and therefore require a degree of comfort. It is, therefore, not practical to make our customers walk through a busy town with their baggage to check into hotels, we therefore use taxis to and from the airport. You might be interested to know that Georgetown taxis do in fact use gas rather than petrol.

Tour Leader: Ann, your tour leader has been leading tours in Malaysia for 2 years and has a working knowledge of the local language - in our opinion and that of others from your tour who have sent feedback, she is an excellent tour leader and was an eminently qualified and suitable person to lead your tour. Details of itineraries change from time to time, weather conditions, new trekking routes are used and the ability to deal with these in a calm and confident manner rather than a prosaic knowledge of the itinerary is important to us in tour leaders. We back this up by using the local guides (and thank you for your kind comments on them). The use of local guides is for the specific local knowledge and Ann, as a tour leader, is required to ensure the smooth running of the trip.

Meals: Tour information explicitly states all meals are included and based on local food. It does specifically say that 'Western style' 3 course meals are not budgeted for and that includes desserts. It also specifically says that any soft or alcoholic beverages consumed with meals are up to the individual customer. Our documentation also clearly states that "Meals are taken as a group, "family style" with the tour leader selecting the restaurant and usually ordering local food with regional specialities". The tour leaders have a system of feeding back to each other restaurants which are good (or conversely bad) and they tend to pool their information when selecting restaurants. My understanding from Ann is that she made use of this. We avoid "telling" the tour leaders which restaurants to use as each have their preferences and the composition of groups and their likes/dislikes vary.

Tour reports from another traveler showed that she enjoyed the tour and we have had positive feedback from the tour. We are sorry that this traveler did not enjoy the tour and that it did not match her expectations.
